Political Winds Shift in Assam as Congress Gains Ground, Says Gaurav Gogoi

Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi says Assam’s political tide is turning as senior leaders join the party and public support grows. He highlights rising unemployment, calls for industrial development, and warns of the decline of the tea industry amid concerns over political control of plantations.

New Delhi: Senior Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi on Wednesday signalled a changing political landscape in Assam, asserting that the steady influx of influential figures into the Congress reflects a broader shift in public sentiment across the state. Speaking on the evolving situation, Gogoi said the party is witnessing growing support from diverse social and professional backgrounds, suggesting renewed confidence in its leadership and vision.

According to Gogoi, the trend of senior leaders joining the Congress month after month is not incidental but indicative of dissatisfaction with the current state of governance in Assam. He said people from all sections of society are gravitating toward the party, driven by shared concerns over employment, economic stability, and the future direction of the state.

Highlighting unemployment as one of Assam’s most pressing challenges, Gogoi said the state’s youth are bearing the brunt of limited job opportunities. He stressed that meaningful employment generation cannot be achieved without a focused push toward industrial development. Strengthening industries, he argued, remains the most effective pathway to reducing joblessness and ensuring sustainable economic growth.

The Congress leader also expressed concern over the deteriorating condition of Assam’s traditional industries, particularly the tea sector, which has long been a backbone of the state’s economy. Gogoi warned that the industry is weakening to the point of near collapse, adding that political interests are increasingly dominating tea garden ownership. He alleged that leaders affiliated with the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party are emerging as plantation owners, raising serious questions about the future of workers and the sector as a whole.

Gogoi’s remarks come at a time when Assam’s political dynamics are under close watch, with rising debates over unemployment, industrial decline, and economic equity. As opposition parties seek to consolidate support ahead of future electoral contests, the Congress appears keen to position itself as an alternative voice for economic revival and youth-focused development in the state.
