Opposition Leader Launches Fierce Critique Against Government Over Women’s Quota Framework

Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi delivers a stinging rebuke in the Lok Sabha, accusing the government of favoring Manuvaad over the Constitution. Gandhi slammed the proposed women’s quota framework as a political tool to rejig India's electoral map, citing a lack of clarity on OBC representation and the caste census. The opposition vows a united front against the controversial legislation.

Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi launched a sharp attack on the government in the Lok Sabha on Friday, alleging a prioritisation of “Manuvaad over Samvidhaan” and asserting that the administration’s stance on the caste census lacks essential clarity regarding representation. Speaking during the debate on the women’s quota bill, Gandhi questioned both the intent and the structural framework of the proposal while outlining the opposition’s comprehensive objections. He claimed that Union Home Minister Amit Shah has stated the caste census has begun and repeated twice that houses do not have caste, yet Gandhi argued the critical issue remains whether this data will facilitate representation in Parliament and state assemblies. The Congress leader indicated that current signals suggest the caste census will have no link to representation for the next 15 years, effectively disconnecting data from political impact for a long period.

Gandhi questioned the core premise of the legislation, asserting that it fails to deliver genuine empowerment and has nothing to do with the rights of women. He described the government’s approach as fundamentally flawed and signaled a united resistance from opposition parties to defeat what he termed an anti-national act. Alleging political motivations, Gandhi suggested the BJP is scared of the erosion of its strength and is attempting to rejig the Indian political map by altering the existing balance of power. He placed OBC representation at the center of his criticism, claiming the framework excludes key sections from meaningful participation and alleging the government’s agenda is to avoid giving power to OBCs.

In a direct challenge, Gandhi offered support for the earlier version of the legislation, stating the opposition would help pass the 2023 women’s bill for implementation this second. He alleged the current proposal is an attempt to change the country’s electoral map while "using and hiding behind India’s women." Despite his critique of the bill, Gandhi emphasized that women are a driving force in the national perspective and remain vital to shaping the country’s future. The remarks come as the Women Reservation Act 2023, which grants a 33 per cent quota to women in legislatures, came into force on Thursday to operationalise the proposed amendment currently under intense debate in Parliament. This confrontation underscores a deepening divide over the timeline and structure of representation, marking a significant moment in the legislative battle over India’s social and political realities.
