PM Modi Targets Congress’ Legacy Politics at Vajpayee Memorial Inauguration in Lucknow
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while inaugurating the Rashtriya Prerna Sthal dedicated to Atal Bihari Vajpayee in Lucknow, criticised past Congress governments for focusing national recognition on one family and ignoring several national icons, calling for broader acknowledgment of India’s contributors.
Addressing a large gathering after unveiling the memorial, PM Modi said India’s history and public spaces had long reflected a pattern in which achievements and institutions were repeatedly associated with one family. He remarked that leaders who made substantial contributions to India’s political, social, and cultural life were not accorded due respect during the Congress’ tenure in power.
According to the Prime Minister, this approach extended beyond symbolism and permeated governance itself. He said books, government schemes, institutions, roads, streets, and public squares were routinely named to glorify one family, creating a narrative in which much of post-Independence India’s progress appeared linked to the same lineage. PM Modi described this as a tendency that emerged after Independence, shaping how national achievements were remembered and institutionalised.
The Prime Minister contrasted this with the Bharatiya Janata Party’s approach, asserting that his government has sought to honour a wider range of national icons whose contributions were previously marginalised. He positioned the Rashtriya Prerna Sthal as part of that effort, highlighting Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s role as a statesman who left a lasting imprint on India’s democratic institutions, foreign policy, and political discourse.
The inauguration of the memorial in Lucknow, Vajpayee’s home state, was framed as both a tribute to the former Prime Minister’s legacy and a symbolic correction of what PM Modi described as historical neglect. The Rashtriya Prerna Sthal is intended to serve as a place of inspiration, commemorating Vajpayee’s life and ideals for future generations.
PM Modi’s remarks are likely to resonate strongly in the broader political landscape, particularly as debates over historical legacy, recognition, and political narratives continue to shape public discourse. By linking the memorial to a larger critique of past governance, the Prime Minister underscored the BJP’s ongoing effort to redefine how India’s national icons are remembered and honoured.
