Washington and New Delhi Near Completion of Landmark Bilateral Trade Deal
Washington and New Delhi are nearing a finalized trade deal as an Indian delegation, led by Darpan Jain, begins fresh talks in the US. With officials citing few "loose ends," the deal follows an interim pact that slashed US tariffs on India to 18%. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is set to visit New Delhi in May to discuss trade, security, and energy.
senior US official characterized the ongoing engagement as "positive and productive," underscoring the Trump administration's commitment to securing a finalized trade deal with India. Another official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, indicated that the agreement is on the verge of completion, noting that "most of it is almost done" and that there are few "loose ends left" to address.
The current diplomatic mission is led by Darpan Jain, Additional Secretary of the Indian Department of Commerce, who is accompanied by a team of approximately one dozen officials. On the American side, the negotiating team is headed by Brendan Lynch from the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR), the lead agency tasked with developing and coordinating the nation’s international trade policy.
US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor officially welcomed the progress in a public statement on Monday. Taking to the social media platform X, the Ambassador hailed the arrival of the Indian delegation as a "great step" toward concluding the bilateral negotiations, describing the anticipated deal as a "win-win for both nations."
This decisive round of diplomacy follows an interim trade agreement reached in February. Under those terms, India committed to reducing tariffs on various US industrial and agricultural products. In a reciprocal measure, the United States significantly lowered trade tariffs on Indian imports, slashing rates from a peak of 50% down to 18%.
The momentum in bilateral relations is expected to continue into next month, as US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is scheduled to arrive in New Delhi for an official state visit in May. Secretary Rubio’s agenda is anticipated to cover critical pillars of the partnership, including trade, regional security, and energy cooperation. The finalization of this trade deal would mark a historic shift in the economic landscape, solidifying the strategic and commercial ties between Washington and New Delhi.
