Mumbai’s suburban rail network faces a pivotal moment as its first non-air-conditioned local train equipped with automatic doors undergoes crucial testing to redefine the city's commuting landscape. The arrival of the 12-car train at Kurla Carshed from the Integral Coach Factory on Monday evening marks a significant departure from traditional open-door rakes, signaling a high-stakes transition in passenger safety and transit technology.

Railway officials state that the prototype addresses ventilation concerns through an airflow capacity increased bynearly 65 per cent, a feat supported by the integration of roof-mounted blowers and dual air intake systems. To maintain essential circulation even when doors remain shut, the rake features wider sliding windows and louvred doors specifically designed for the city's dense passenger loads. This administrative shift toward automated enclosures represents a critical milestone in modernizing the lifeline of Mumbai, balancing the necessity of closed-door safety with the environmental demands of a non-AC carriage.
