Forest Watcher Caught on Camera Aiding Illegal Timber Smuggling in Lakhimpur Kheri; Immediate Action Initiated
A serious investigation has been launched in Lakhimpur Kheri’s Majhgain forest range after a viral video exposed a forest watcher, Chunna, allegedly facilitating the illegal smuggling of banned Sagwan and Sakhu wood. The Forest Department has taken immediate action by attaching the accused to the range office as authorities probe internal accountability lapses and illegal recovery claims.
In the viral footage, the watcher from the Majhgain forest area, identified as Chunna, a resident of Naubana, is observed sitting on a motorcycle while wearing his official uniform. Allegations state that he was actively assisting an e-rickshaw loaded with valuable Sagwan and Sakhu timber in exiting the protected forest zone. Alongside the smuggling allegations, claims of illegal recovery have also surfaced, further intensifying the gravity of the matter and pointing toward systemic corruption.
Following the emergence of the video evidence, the forest department initiated immediate administrative action. Forest Range Officer of Majhgain, Ankit Kumar Singh, confirmed that the concerned watcher has been attached to the range office with immediate effect, pending further proceedings. Singh further stated that a detailed report of the entire matter has been submitted to the Divisional Forest Officer, emphasizing that strict action will be taken against the accused following the completion of a formal investigation.
The incident has raised serious concerns regarding internal monitoring and accountability within the forest department, particularly in sensitive forest zones where illegal timber activities remain a persistent threat. This case underscores the urgent necessity for stricter vigilance and transparent enforcement mechanisms to curb violations and protect natural resources from internal exploitation.
