Dehradun Vigil: Northeast Students Demand Justice Following Tragic Death of Tripura Peer

Following the tragic killing of Angel Chakma, a student from Tripura, the Northeast student community in Dehradun organized a massive candle march on New Year's Eve 2025. The peaceful protest called for immediate justice, an end to racial discrimination, and enhanced safety measures for out-of-state students in Uttarakhand.

DEHRADUN — As the curtain fell on 2025, the streets of Dehradun were illuminated not by celebratory fireworks, but by the somber glow of hundreds of candles. On New Year’s Eve, the Northeast student community gathered in a powerful display of solidarity to mourn the death of Angel Chakma, a student from Tripura whose recent killing has sparked outrage and fear. The procession, which wound through the heart of the city, served as both a memorial and a defiant call for systemic change regarding the safety of students from India’s frontier states.

The march was characterized by a heavy silence, broken only by slogans demanding a thorough investigation and swift legal action against those responsible for Chakma’s death. Beyond the immediate call for justice, the demonstrators highlighted a persistent and painful reality: the recurring shadow of racial profiling and discriminatory slurs that many Northeast students face while pursuing higher education in the mainland. Organizers emphasized that this was not merely a reaction to a single isolated crime, but a grassroots movement intended to sensitize the local administration and the broader public to the vulnerabilities of the migrant student population.

As the vigil concluded, student leaders urged the Uttarakhand authorities to implement more robust safety protocols and foster a more inclusive environment. The tragedy of Angel Chakma has become a catalyst for a broader conversation on equality and the fundamental right to security, regardless of one's ethnic background. The peaceful yet firm nature of the protest underscored a growing resolve among the youth to ensure that such a loss of life leads to concrete institutional reforms and a definitive end to the prejudice that continues to marginalize students from the Northeast.
