New Delhi: In a solemn and deeply symbolic gesture, Bangladesh’s High Commissioner to India, Md. Riaz Hamidullah, paid tribute to the Indian soldiers who sacrificed their lives on Bangladeshi soil during the 1971 Liberation War, underscoring the enduring bond forged between the two nations through shared struggle and sacrifice.

Addressing the gathering, the High Commissioner acknowledged the supreme sacrifice of 1,668 Indian soldiers who laid down their lives in support of Bangladesh’s fight for independence. He described their contribution as a defining chapter in the history of the region, one that continues to shape the relationship between India and Bangladesh more than five decades later. The tribute served as a reminder of the pivotal role played by the Indian Armed Forces in bringing the Liberation War to its conclusion and enabling the birth of Bangladesh as a sovereign nation.

Beyond the battlefield, Hamidullah also recalled the crucial support extended by prominent Indian citizens who stood in solidarity with the Bangladeshi people during their struggle. He specifically mentioned legendary sitar maestro Pandit Ravi Shankar and iconic singer Lata Mangeshkar, among other distinguished personalities, noting how their cultural influence and advocacy helped draw global attention to the humanitarian crisis and the cause of Bangladesh’s independence.

The commemoration reflected not only gratitude for military assistance but also recognition of the wider moral, cultural, and diplomatic support that India extended during one of the most critical moments in Bangladesh’s history. Officials present emphasized that such acts of remembrance reinforce mutual respect and historical understanding between the two neighboring countries.
