₹22,000 Power Bill in Just 22 Days Sparks Smart Meter Row in Uttar Pradesh’s Sitapur
A Sitapur resident has raised serious concerns after receiving an electricity bill of ₹22,000 just 22 days after a smart meter was installed at his home. Alleging billing errors and lack of response from local officials, the consumer is now approaching higher authorities for relief.
The affected consumer, identified as Rahees, said the smart meter was installed at his residence only 22 days ago. To his shock, he was subsequently issued an electricity bill amounting to ₹22,000 for the short billing period. Rahees maintains that his household consumption does not justify such a high charge and believes the bill reflects a serious discrepancy linked to the new meter.
According to Rahees, when he approached the local electricity department to register a complaint, officials allegedly refused to review the bill and insisted that payment was mandatory. He further claimed that he was asked to leave the office when he continued to question the amount, leaving him without any immediate resolution.
With no relief at the local level, Rahees is now approaching higher authorities in hopes of getting the bill reviewed and corrected. He continues to pursue administrative remedies, seeking clarity on how the charges were calculated and whether the smart meter is functioning correctly.
The incident has added to growing unease among consumers over smart meter installations, particularly regarding transparency, billing accuracy, and the effectiveness of complaint-handling mechanisms. As authorities push for wider adoption of smart metering systems, cases like this highlight the need for robust oversight and responsive grievance redressal to maintain public trust.
