Nitish Kumar Interacts with Power Consumers, Free Electricity Scheme Brings Smiles Across Bihar
Patna, August 12, 2025.
Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Tuesday interacted with electricity consumers across the state via video conferencing from ‘Sankalp’ at 1, Anne Marg. During the programme, he highlighted the state government’s decision under the Electricity Consumer Assistance Scheme to provide 125 units of free power every month to all domestic consumers.
The event connected consumers from all districts, with women from Supaul, Nalanda, Muzaffarpur, and Gaya sharing their gratitude directly with the Chief Minister.

Komal Kumari from Supaul said the savings from free power would be deposited into her daughter’s account for her future.
-
Leela Kumari from Nalanda said the money saved would be used for household needs, children’s education, and healthcare.
-
Gudia Khatoon from Muzaffarpur shared that her electricity bill had dropped to zero, allowing her to spend more on her children’s health and education.
-
Noorjahan Khatoon from Gaya said that the scheme had eased her family’s financial burden, with savings now going toward essential household expenses.
CM Nitish Kumar’s Address
The Chief Minister recalled the poor state of electricity supply before 2005, when even the capital Patna received power for only 7–8 hours a day. After forming the government on November 24, 2005, major reforms were undertaken in the power sector:
-
In 2015, the Har Ghar Bijli (Electricity for Every Home) initiative was launched and completed in October 2018, two months ahead of schedule.
-
All newly built homes and hamlets have also been connected to the grid.
-
Electricity has always been supplied at subsidised rates, even though the state spends heavily to purchase it.
Nitish Kumar said the scheme, effective from the July billing cycle, is benefiting 18.9 million domestic consumers. He also stressed that the government is promoting solar energy, with rooftop solar plants already installed on government buildings and plans to extend the benefit to interested domestic consumers.
“I am confident this initiative will bring much-needed relief to power consumers, and the state government will continue to work for the welfare of the people,”
the CM stated.
Special Highlights of the Programme

Energy Department Secretary Manoj Kumar Singh welcomed the CM with a green sapling.
-
