Patna, August 9, 2025 — On the auspicious occasion of Raksha Bandhan and ‘Bihar Tree Protection Day’, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar tied a raksha sutra (sacred protection thread) to a tree and planted a sapling at Rajdhani Vatika in Patna. The gesture was aimed at spreading awareness about environmental conservation and inspiring citizens to plant and protect trees.
Origin of Bihar Tree Protection Day
The Chief Minister recalled that Bihar Tree Protection Day was first launched on August 13, 2012, coinciding with Raksha Bandhan. The day’s purpose is to encourage people to protect plants, carry out large-scale tree plantation, and develop a sense of responsibility towards nature. “To counter the damage caused by climate change, plantation and tree protection are essential,” he emphasized.
Focus on Jal-Jeevan-Hariyali and Eco-Tourism
Highlighting the state government’s initiatives, Kumar said that under the Jal-Jeevan-Hariyali campaign, extensive plantation drives are being conducted across Bihar. The state is also promoting eco-tourism to combine environmental protection with economic development. “Due to government efforts, people are now more aware of environmental preservation, wildlife protection, and the importance of planting trees,” he said.
Event Attended by Senior Leaders and Officials
The event saw the presence of Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary, Environment, Forest & Climate Change Minister Dr. Sunil Kumar, Principal Secretary to CM Dr. S. Symbolic Message of Protection
By tying the raksha sutra to the tree, the Chief Minister sent out a symbolic message — just as we vow to protect our loved ones on Raksha Bandhan, we must also pledge to safeguard nature and trees. During the plantation drive, he urged citizens to actively participate in such initiatives for a greener and healthier Bihar.
