Kosi is a Blessing, Not a Curse – Deputy CM Samrat Choudhary

Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary has described the Kosi River as a “blessing, not a curse” for the state, expressing deep gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for naming one of the towers in Delhi’s new MPs’ residential complex after the river.

Choudhary said this gesture reflects PM Modi’s deep affection and unwavering commitment to Bihar. Posting on social media platform X, he wrote, “On behalf of the people of Bihar, I extend my heartfelt thanks to the Hon’ble Prime Minister.” On Sunday, PM Modi inaugurated 184 newly built MP residences. Patna, August 11.

The four towers have been named Krishna, Godavari, Kosi, and Hooghly. During the inauguration, PM Modi remarked that just as these rivers give life to millions, the towers named after them will bring a new flow of joy to the lives of the public representatives who reside there.

From Symbol of Disaster to Source of Prosperity

Choudhary emphasized that under Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s leadership, the NDA’s “double-engine” government has transformed the image of the Kosi River. Once synonymous with floods and devastation, Kosi is now a channel for water supply and development.

He pointed to the Kosi-Mechi Interlinking Project as a prime example of this transformation. The historic project, with an estimated cost of ₹6,282.32 crore, aims to be completed by March 2029. It will irrigate an additional 76,000 hectares of land and provide major relief from flood disasters. Under this plan, floodwaters from the Kosi will be diverted in a controlled manner to the Mechi River, balancing water resources and protecting hundreds of villages and millions of farmers from annual floods.

Boost to Agriculture and Rural Employment

The Deputy CM said the project will not only provide flood relief but also ensure year-round irrigation for farmers, leading to a significant increase in crop yields. Utilizing floodwaters for agriculture and rural development will also create new employment opportunities for the youth.

Citing past examples, Choudhary said, “In 2007-08, when Nepal released 1.93 lakh cusecs of water, 15 districts were flooded. But last year, despite the release of 6 lakh cusecs, only 156 villages were affected. Our aim is to ensure that not a single village is impacted by floods.”

He expressed confidence that once the project is completed, Bihar’s farmers will be free from floods, self-reliant, and prosperous. The double-engine government’s visionary policies, he said, are paving the way for a stronger rural economy and a transformed Bihar.
