Central Sanskrit University Launches Digital Gateway to Revive Traditional Ayurveda Gurukuls

Central Sanskrit University launches the Ayurveda Gurukulam Affiliation Portal and national guidelines to formalize traditional medical education. Integrating with the NCISM framework, the initiative introduces a 7.5-year BAMS pathway and a specialized PAP NEET entrance exam to bridge Sanskrit scholarship with professional Ayurvedic practice through a transparent digital ecosystem.

In a landmark move to bridge ancient Vedic wisdom with modern medical standards, Central Sanskrit University (CSU), New Delhi, has officially unveiled the Ayurveda Gurukulam Affiliation Portal alongside a comprehensive set of regulatory guidelines. This digital initiative marks a transformative shift in the landscape of traditional Indian medicine, establishing a formal national framework for Gurukul-based Ayurveda education. The portal and guidelines were jointly inaugurated at the university’s Saraswat Auditorium by Vice-Chancellor Prof. Shrinivas Varkhedi and Dr. Manisha Kothekar, President of the National Commission for Indian System of Medicine (NCISM), signaling a unified effort to standardize and digitize the affiliation process for traditional educational institutions across India.

Functioning as the primary nodal agency, Central Sanskrit University has engineered this digital platform to streamline the registration, inspection, and accreditation of Ayurveda Gurukuls. By transitioning these processes into a transparent online ecosystem, the university aims to provide a robust regulatory backbone to an educational system that has historically operated on the periphery of formal medical licensing. During the launch, Dr. Kothekar emphasized that this integration is essential because the philosophical and clinical foundations of Ayurveda are inextricably linked to Sanskrit. She noted that without a profound understanding of the original Sanskrit texts, the holistic comprehension of Ayurvedic anatomy, physiology, and therapeutic principles remains incomplete.

The initiative aligns closely with the objectives of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, seeking a harmonious balance between ancestral heritage and contemporary innovation. Under this new structural model, which operates within the NCISM Pre-Ayurveda BAMS framework, the university will introduce an integrated 7-year and 6-month academic roadmap. This comprehensive pathway comprises a two-year Pre-Ayurveda Program (PAP), followed by the standard four-and-a-half-year BAMS degree and a mandatory one-year internship. To ensure merit-based access, CSU will conduct a specialized Pre-Ayurveda Programme entrance examination (PAP NEET), modeled after the national NEET format, specifically designed to allow students from Sanskrit backgrounds to transition into professional Ayurvedic medicine.

Beyond its role as a regulator, Central Sanskrit University is set to lead by example by establishing its own Ayurveda Gurukulam programs, with the initial phase rolling out at its New Delhi and Nashik campuses. The launch event saw a high-level assembly of academic leaders, including Registrar Prof. R. G. Murali Krishna, Rajasthan Sanskrit University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Madan Mohan Jha, and various deans and coordinators who contributed to the framework's development. By formalizing the Gurukul system, the university is not merely digitizing administrative tasks but is actively curating a credible, future-oriented national model. This systemic overhaul is poised to elevate the global prestige of both Sanskrit and Ayurveda, ensuring that the classical traditions of Indian healing are preserved through a rigorous, scientifically validated, and professionally recognized educational pipeline.
