LeT Leader Signals Readiness for Joint Action Against Afghanistan-Based Militants, Sparks Regional Tension

A senior Lashkar-e-Taiba leader has warned that the group is ready to support the Pakistani military in actions against militants allegedly operating from Afghan soil. Qari Yaqoob Shaikh’s statement, backing Pakistan’s military leadership and citing a clerical fatwa, has heightened tensions between Islamabad and Kabul.

A fresh wave of unease has swept through the region after a senior Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) figure declared that the Pakistan-based militant organisation is prepared to confront armed groups operating from Afghan soil. The remarks, attributed to Qari Yaqoob Shaikh — a close associate of LeT founder Hafiz Saeed — have intensified concerns over already strained Pakistan-Afghanistan relations.

In a statement circulating in Pakistan, Shaikh voiced support for Pakistan Army Chief General Asim Munir’s assumption of the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) role. He also cited a recent fatwa issued by clerics from Pakistan-administered Kashmir and Afghanistan, which accuses Kabul of allowing anti-Pakistan militant networks to function freely within its territory.

Shaikh warned that if the Afghan government continues to permit activities that threaten Pakistan’s internal security, LeT is willing to join hands with the Pakistani military in carrying out operations against such groups. His comments are being closely watched by security analysts, who view them as an unusual public alignment between a proscribed militant organisation and state security interests.

The statement adds to mounting diplomatic friction, as Islamabad has consistently accused the Afghan Taliban administration of failing to curb groups targeting Pakistan. Kabul has dismissed these allegations, insisting that it does not allow its territory to be used for cross-border violence.

Shaikh’s assertions, however, underscore the growing volatility along the Pakistan-Afghanistan frontier and highlight the deepening mistrust between the two neighbours. The coming weeks may prove critical as both sides navigate the consequences of these sharply worded warnings and their potential impact on regional stability.
