Bangladesh Sets February 12, 2026, for Pivotal National Elections Following Hasina’s Ouster

Bangladesh will hold its 13th National Parliamentary Election on February 12, 2026—the first vote since Sheikh Hasina’s ouster. CEC Naseeruddin announced the schedule, confirming simultaneous polling with the July Charter referendum and key dates for nominations and overseas voter applications.

Bangladesh will head to the polls on February 12, 2026, for its 13th National Parliamentary Election, marking the country’s first major democratic exercise since the removal of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The announcement came on Thursday from Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Naseeruddin, who addressed the nation with a call for renewed civic responsibility as the country prepares for a high-stakes return to electoral politics.

In his televised statement, CEC Naseeruddin said Bangladesh was ready to demonstrate its ability to hold “free and democratic voting,” urging political parties, citizens, and institutions to contribute to what he described as a defining moment in the nation’s democratic journey. “I urge all to play a historical role in our democratic journey by making the upcoming 13th national parliament election a success,” he said.

The Election Commission confirmed that voting for the general election will take place alongside the July Charter referendum, combining two major national processes into a single day. All 300 parliamentary seats will be contested, with officials estimating that approximately 127 million registered voters—including more than four million first-time voters—will participate.

Non-resident Bangladeshis will be able to submit their applications online starting Friday, with the window remaining open until December 25. According to the election schedule, candidates must file their nominations by December 29, 2025, setting in motion what is expected to be one of the most closely watched electoral cycles in recent years.
