Farmers Are the Country’s True Practical Scientists, Says Shivraj Singh Chouhan

Shivraj Singh Chouhan, speaking in New Delhi, praised Indian farmers as the nation’s “greatest practical scientists,” highlighting their experiential knowledge, daily experimentation and critical role in ensuring food security and strengthening India’s economic foundation.

In a strong endorsement of India’s agricultural community, senior BJP leader Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Tuesday hailed farmers as the nation’s “greatest practical scientists,” crediting their instinctive understanding of land, climate and nature for sustaining India’s food security. Speaking in New Delhi, Chouhan emphasized that farming in India is not merely a livelihood but an evolving field of innovation driven by generations of hands-on knowledge.

Chouhan highlighted that a farmer’s daily work is grounded in constant experimentation—whether it involves reading soil behaviour, anticipating weather shifts or adapting cultivation practices to changing conditions. According to him, this experiential wisdom, refined over years of close interaction with the environment, enables farmers to achieve breakthroughs without formal laboratories or scientific instruments.

He noted that India’s economic resilience is deeply tied to the strength of its agricultural sector, which relies heavily on the dedication and perseverance of farmers. Their contribution, he said, forms the backbone of the nation’s food security system and underpins overall economic stability.

Chouhan stressed that recognizing farmers as innovators is essential to understanding the true foundations of India’s progress. Their ability to apply traditional experience to modern challenges, he added, makes them indispensable in shaping the country’s agricultural future.
