Bihar Cyber Police Bust Impersonation Racket; Two Held for Extorting Man by Claiming His Brother Was in Custody

Bihar’s Motihari Cyber Police have arrested two men who allegedly posed as police officers to extort ₹1 lakh from a Ballia resident by falsely claiming his brother was in custody. Raids in Raxaul and Haraiya led to key seizures, marking a major step in the region’s fight against cyber fraud.

In a significant breakthrough against rising digital fraud, the Cyber Police Station in Motihari, Bihar, has arrested two men accused of posing as police officers to extort money from an unsuspecting victim in Uttar Pradesh. The suspects, residents of the Haraiya and Raxaul police station areas in East Champaran district, were taken into custody following a swift and coordinated operation.

According to investigators, the scheme unfolded when the accused called Ashutosh Kumar of Ballia district, claiming that his brother had been detained by police and would only be released if he paid ₹1 lakh. Alarmed and misled by the fabricated claim, Kumar transferred the money to the bank account provided by the fraudsters. Once he realized he had been cheated, he reported the incident through the national cybercrime portal.

Acting on the complaint, a team led by Cyber DYSP Abhinav Parashar traced the suspects and carried out raids in Raxaul and Haraiya, where both men were apprehended. Police recovered a four-wheeler, two mobile phones, three ATM cards, and three bank passbooks believed to have been used in the fraudulent transactions.

The arrests mark a notable success in the ongoing crackdown on cybercrime in the region. Authorities say the investigation will now focus on uncovering the wider network potentially linked to similar impersonation scams. Officials emphasized that the case underscores the growing sophistication of cybercriminals and the urgent need for public awareness to prevent such frauds.
