New Rajya Sabha Chair Pledges Fair Play as Kharge Extends Congratulatory Message and Renewed Trust

Mallikarjun Kharge congratulated the newly appointed Rajya Sabha Chair, emphasizing the constitutional importance of the role and expressing confidence in transparent, impartial functioning. Citing democratic principles and noting the unprecedented exit of former Chair Jagdeep Dhankhar, Kharge reaffirmed the opposition’s commitment to orderly parliamentary debate.

In New Delhi on Monday, Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge extended warm congratulations to the newly elected Chair of the Upper House, underscoring the constitutional gravity of the position and the responsibility it carries in ensuring orderly and impartial conduct of parliamentary proceedings. Kharge’s remarks came as the House transitioned leadership following an unexpected vacancy.

Speaking in the chamber, Kharge invoked the democratic principles articulated by former President Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, noting that a vibrant parliamentary democracy depends on the opposition’s ability to critique government policy freely, fearlessly, and without obstruction. He affirmed that the Congress party remains committed to established parliamentary conventions, structured debate, and the smooth functioning of the Rajya Sabha.

Kharge also drew attention to the abrupt and unforeseen resignation of former Chair Jagdeep Dhankhar, observing that the House had no opportunity to formally bid him farewell—an occurrence he described as unprecedented in the annals of Parliament. He expressed confidence that the new presiding officer would demonstrate impartiality in handling all members and uphold equal space for both the ruling benches and the opposition.

As the Upper House embarks on a new chapter in its leadership, Kharge’s message underscored both continuity and expectation: a call for transparent stewardship at a time when parliamentary decorum and balance between government and opposition remain essential to India’s democratic framework.
