According to the police, the couple had been in a relationship for several years. The woman worked for a private company in Nagpur and lived with a friend in the Dhantoli area. The accused, who is originally from Maharashtra's Amravati, was pursuing a PhD in Pune.
A few months ago, the accused, accompanied by his friend, met the woman's mother and expressed his desire to marry her. Her mother approved of the marriage. However, the accused's family opposed the relationship. Police said he kept this from the woman and continued meeting her in Nagpur.
Whenever the woman raised the issue of marriage, the accused avoided giving her a clear answer and attempted to evade the matter, police said. After a few days, he told her that he could not marry her.
According to the complaint filed by the woman's family, the accused also threatened to circulate her objectionable photographs on social media if she continued to pressure him to marry her.
The continued threats and his refusal to marry her caused the woman immense mental stress.
On the night of September 19, the woman video-called her partner and told him that she was going to end her life. According to her mother's complaint, he did not make any attempt to stop her. While the video call was still connected, the woman hanged herself to death.
The investigation revealed that the call remained connected for around 23 minutes after the woman had died.
Following the complaint, a case of abetment to suicide was filed against the accused at Dhantoli police station. Police officials said they are questioning him as part of the investigation.
