India Bolsters Humanitarian Aid to Afghanistan Amidst Regional Crisis and Pakistani Aggression

India delivers 13 tonnes of BCG vaccines and extensive HADR material to Afghanistan following devastating floods, earthquakes, and a massacre at a Kabul hospital. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal condemned Pakistani airstrikes on the Omid Addiction Treatment Hospital, labeling the assault a blatant violation of sovereignty while reaffirming India’s commitment to Afghan humanitarian aid.

In a decisive move to support a nation grappling with natural disasters and external aggression, India has dispatched critical humanitarian and medical supplies to Afghanistan, reinforcing its commitment to the Afghan people during a period of profound hardship. Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal confirmed via a post on X that India delivered 13 tonnes of BCG vaccines alongside related dry material to Afghanistan’s Ministry of Public Health, a significant contribution aimed at augmenting the country’s child immunization programme against tuberculosis. This medical intervention follows a series of strategic relief efforts designed to stabilize the region’s health and infrastructure.

The delivery of vaccines coincides with a broader humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) mission initiated on April 5, triggered by the devastating impact of recent floods and earthquakes on the Afghan population. Jaiswal expressed India's unwavering solidarity with the people of Afghanistan, detailing a comprehensive relief package that included kitchen sets, hygiene kits, plastic sheets, tarpaulins, and sleeping bags. The spokesperson emphasized that India remains dedicated to extending support during this challenging time, positioning New Delhi as a steadfast partner in Afghanistan’s recovery efforts amidst the mounting environmental and social pressures facing the nation.

Furthermore, India’s humanitarian reach extended into the sphere of emergency trauma care following a brutal strike by Pakistan on the 2,000-bed Omid Addiction Treatment Hospital in Kabul’s Pul-e-Charkhi area. In March, India delivered a 2.5-tonne consignment of emergency medicines, medical disposables, kits, and equipment to support the swift recovery of those injured in the assault. The attack resulted in a massacre, claiming the lives of over 400 people and injuring more than 250 others. Jaiswal condemned the heinous act of violence, noting that India stands in solidarity with the Afghan people and will continue to provide all possible support in this difficult hour.

The Ministry of External Affairs issued a scathing critique of Islamabad’s actions, unequivocally condemning the airstrikes on the hospital and rehabilitation center. The MEA described the incident as a cowardly and unconscionable act of violence against a facility that can by no means be justified as a military target. Asserting that Pakistan is attempting to dress up a massacre as a military operation, India characterized the aggression as a blatant assault on Afghanistan’s sovereignty. This act of hostility, according to the MEA, poses a direct threat to regional peace and stability, highlighting the severe geopolitical implications of the strike.

Ultimately, India’s multifaceted assistance—ranging from life-saving vaccines to disaster relief and emergency medical supplies—underscores a profound humanitarian mission. By providing essential resources in the wake of both natural calamities and external military aggression, India reinforces its role as a vital regional stabilizer. This ongoing support not only addresses the immediate survival needs of the Afghan people but also serves as a formal rejection of violence and a call for the protection of sovereign integrity and human life in South Asia.
