CM Bhagwant Mann Calls for ‘Mass Movement’ to Eradicate Drug Menace in Punjab

Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann urges citizens to turn the "War Against Drugs" into a powerful mass movement. Highlighting the collective responsibility of every resident, Mann warned that drug abuse is a threat to every household and called for a joint effort between the public and government to create a drug-free, secure Punjab.

CHANDIGARH: Emphasizing that the scourge of drug abuse is a collective threat rather than an isolated tragedy, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has called for a decisive "War Against Drugs" to be transformed into a grassroots people’s movement. Speaking on the urgency of state-wide intervention, the Chief Minister utilized a poignant metaphor to highlight the gravity of the crisis, warning that one should never mistake the fire consuming a neighbor’s house for a celebratory bonfire. He cautioned that the heat of such a social conflagration eventually reaches every doorstep, necessitating a unified front to protect the future of the state.

The Chief Minister’s appeal marks a strategic shift toward community-led enforcement and social accountability. Mann underscored that while the administration remains committed to systemic crackdowns, the ultimate uprooting of the drug trade requires every citizen to embrace their social responsibility. By framing the struggle as a joint venture between the provincial government and the public, the administration aims to dismantle the supply chains and social vulnerabilities that have long plagued the region. Mann expressed firm confidence that this collaborative synergy is the only viable path toward restoring Punjab’s legacy as a healthy, secure, and prosperous state.

This renewed push for a "Jan Andolan" (mass movement) signals an administrative evolution in handling Punjab's long-standing narcotics challenge. Beyond mere policing, the government is now pivoting toward a narrative of collective vigilance, urging neighborhoods to proactively participate in the identification and elimination of drug networks. As Punjab seeks to shed the stigma of substance abuse, the success of this campaign will likely hinge on the transition from high-level policy to active, community-level resistance against the drug trade.
