Secretary Sean Duffy Accuses Democrats of Misleading Public on Affordability Debate

U.S. Secretary Sean Duffy criticized Democrats during a White House Cabinet meeting, claiming their messaging on affordability misrepresents legal and economic realities. Citing the CAFE fuel economy standards dispute, Duffy argued Democrats’ approach contradicts congressional intent and ongoing regulatory processes.

Washington — U.S. Secretary Sean Duffy on Monday sharply criticized Democratic leaders over their approach to national affordability policies, arguing that their public messaging bears little resemblance to economic reality. Speaking during a Cabinet meeting at the White House, Duffy said President Donald J. Trump’s recent remarks on affordability reflected concrete policy direction, while Democrats, in his view, have relied on narratives “built on falsehoods.”

Duffy pointed to the day’s policy discussions as an example, highlighting the controversy surrounding the Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards — federal regulations established by Congress to improve fuel efficiency in vehicles. He argued that the standards had been misused in political debates and that certain Democratic critiques ignored both statutory intent and the practical constraints of implementing such regulations.

According to Duffy, the handling of the CAFE framework demonstrated a broader pattern of what he described as inconsistencies between Democratic rhetoric and the legal requirements governing federal policymaking. He asserted that the process had been portrayed in ways that diverged from the law, as well as from the realities faced by regulatory agencies and the automotive industry.

As the administration continues to position affordability as a central pillar of its economic agenda, Duffy’s comments underscore escalating partisan tensions around regulatory policy. The debate is expected to broaden in the coming months as lawmakers weigh competing visions for economic relief, consumer protection, and industry regulation — with both parties seeking to shape public perception ahead of future legislative battles.
