Karur stampede: TVK district secretary Mathyiyalagan nabbed after FIR names 3 party leaders

Karur: Karur Police on Monday nabbed Vijay-led TVK’s district secretary Mathyiyalagan in connection with the stampede that claimed 41 lives. This came after the police filed an FIR in the case, his along with two other party leaders--state general secretary Bussy Anand and deputy general secretary Nirmal Kumar.

The TVK leaders have been booked under several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including 105 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), 110 (attempt to commit culpable homicide), 125 (endangering life), and 223 (disobedience to order). They also face charges under Section 3 of the Tamil Nadu Public Property (Prevention of Damage and Loss) Act, 1992.

Police cites Vijay’s extended stay inside vehicle as reason for unrest

The police have blamed actor-turned-politician Vijay's long stay inside his campaign vehicle for the stampede that occurred in Karur. According to the FIR filed, the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam leader’s delay caused the crowd to grow restless and overcrowded as people waited to see him during the Saturday rally, reported PTI.

Authorities said a huge number of people had gathered, and the narrow venue couldn't handle the crowd. As excitement built, many in the audience surged forward to catch a glimpse of Vijay, causing panic and pushing among those in front. The situation worsened when some people climbed trees and metal sheds for a better view. These structures couldn’t bear the weight and collapsed, falling on the crowd and sparking chaos. Many were injured due to being crushed or suffocated in the commotion, the FIR stated. To regain control, the police had to use lathi-charge to disperse the crowd.
