According to data from the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, onion prices varied across major metropolitan cities. In the national capital Delhi, onions were sold at ₹53 per kg, while the price in Mumbai stood at ₹58 per kg. Kolkata and Chennai recorded the highest price among the major metros at ₹60 per kg.
Across the country, the average retail price of onions was ₹54.20 per kg on September 22. During the same period, the maximum price was recorded at ₹100 per kg, while the minimum price stood at ₹29 per kg.
However, data from private trade sources indicated that retail onion prices were considerably higher than the figures reported by the ministry.
According to a PTI report, onion prices in Delhi's retail markets were significantly above the government data. Depending on the locality, quality and category of onions, retail prices were reported to be between ₹60 and ₹70 per kg.
The central government has been taking several measures to control onion prices and provide relief to consumers. As part of these efforts, government agencies have increased market supplies by selling buffer-stock onions at the subsidised rate of ₹35 per kg.
Despite these measures, retail onion prices have not seen a significant decline in Delhi and other major cities. The gap between government-controlled sale prices and prevailing retail rates continues to keep onion prices a concern for consumers.
