Uttar Pradesh Spearheads India’s Global Dominance with Unprecedented 40% Surge in Milk Production
Uttar Pradesh achieves a historic 40% increase in milk production, reaching 388 lakh tonnes to lead India’s dairy sector. Under Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the state now contributes 16% of the national supply while generating Rs. 5000 crore through women-led self-help groups. Discover the latest FSSAI standards and the administrative efforts driving India’s global milk dominance.
Beyond raw production volume, the Uttar Pradesh State Rural Livelihood Mission has revolutionized the sector by associating lakhs of women with dairy activities. These self-help women groups are now collectively procuring nearly 10 lakh litres of milk daily, a feat that has generated business worth Rs. 5000 crore. Amidst this expansion, strict quality standards remain paramount; according to FSSAI, milk of different classes must conform to specific requirements for milk fat and milk solids-not-fat independently. Specifically, buffalo milk must contain a minimum of 5.0% milk fat and 9.0% milk solids, while cow milk requires 3.2% and 8.3%, goat milk 3.0% and 8.0%, and camel milk 2.0% and 6.0%. Toned milk must meet 3.0% fat and 8.5% solids, double toned milk requires 1.3% and 9.0%, and skimmed milk must not exceed 0.5% fat with 8.7% solids. Full cream milk is mandated to have a minimum of 6.0% milk fat and 9.0% milk solids.
Strict regulatory compliance ensures that milk contains no food additives and adheres to the Food Safety and Standards (Contaminants, Toxins and Residues) Regulations, 2011. Furthermore, the total urea content in milk is legally restricted to no more than 700 ppm. All products must be prepared and handled according to the requirements in Schedule 4 of the Food Safety and Standards (Licensing and Registration of Food Businesses) Regulations, 2011, alongside all guidelines specified under the Food Safety and Standard Act, 2006. This rigorous administrative framework, combined with massive production leaps, underscores Uttar Pradesh’s pivotal role in sustaining India’s nutritional security and economic prosperity through a sophisticated, high-standard dairy ecosystem.
