Sambhal Administration Cracks Down on Cemetery Encroachments; 48 Residents Served Eviction Notices

The Sambhal administration has issued eviction notices to 48 people living on 8 bighas of encroached cemetery land near Jama Masjid in Uttar Pradesh. Following a massive police-led land survey, authorities have given residents 15 days to vacate or provide legal proof of ownership. The local administration in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh, has intensified its crackdown on illegal land occupation, serving formal legal notices to 48 individuals residing on disputed cemetery grounds near the historic Jama Masjid in the Kot locality. This decisive move follows an extensive administrative survey conducted on December 30, during which revenue officials, backed by a significant police presence, demarcated eight bighas of land belonging to the graveyard. The notices issued to the occupants of 22 structures, comprising both residential homes and commercial shops, provide a 15-day window for the residents to submit their justifications or face imminent demolition and eviction.

According to Tehsildar officials overseeing the operation, the enforcement action is a direct result of the recent land measurement exercise aimed at reclaiming public and religious property from unauthorized possession. The atmosphere in the Kot neighborhood remains tense but orderly as the local Tehsildar confirmed that the notices have been successfully served to all affected parties. Authorities have emphasized that the proceedings are being conducted strictly within the framework of existing land laws, warning that the failure to provide satisfactory legal documentation regarding the ownership of these plots within the stipulated timeframe will trigger "stringent action" to restore the land to its original status.

This administrative push is part of a broader effort to sanitize land records and remove long-standing encroachments on sensitive properties in the region. By setting a firm two-week deadline, the Sambhal district administration has signaled its commitment to law enforcement over political or social sensitivities. As the 15-day countdown begins, the eyes of the community are on the local government to see if the displacement will proceed or if legal interventions will stall the process. The outcome of this standoff will likely serve as a precedent for how the Uttar Pradesh administration handles similar land-use disputes involving religious sites and private settlements in the future.
