Runway Resilience: Srinagar International Airport Restores Operations Following Heavy Snowfall

Srinagar International Airport has successfully resumed flight operations following a massive snow clearance effort after heavy winter storms blanketed the Kashmir Valley. While the Indian Air Force and BRO have restored the runway, travelers heading to Delhi face separate delays due to local NOTAM restrictions. Stay informed on the latest regional travel updates.

Air travel in the Kashmir Valley roared back to life today as Srinagar International Airport officially resumed flight operations, successfully overcoming a significant weather disruption that had brought the region's primary transit hub to a standstill. The heavy snowfall on January 23 had transformed the landscape into a pristine but impassable white expanse, forcing an immediate suspension of all aerial activity and leaving hundreds of passengers in limbo. However, the closure proved temporary, thanks to a coordinated technical response that underscored the region’s readiness for extreme winter conditions.

The restoration of the runway was the result of a high-stakes, around-the-clock clearance operation spearheaded by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) in close collaboration with the Border Roads Organisation (BRO). Heavy machinery worked through the accumulation to ensure the tarmac met the rigorous safety standards required for high-altitude landings. Following a comprehensive safety assessment and the lifting of operational restrictions by the Indian Air Force, the airport signaled its return to normalcy. The breakthrough moment was captured in celebratory footage of an Air India Express aircraft touching down smoothly against the backdrop of the snow-clad valley, a visual confirmation that the arterial link to the rest of the country had been re-established.

Despite the breakthrough in Srinagar, the ripple effects of the winter weather continue to complicate the travel landscape for those bound for the national capital. While the local weather in the Valley has transitioned to a dry spell, allowing for a steady flow of departures and arrivals, several flights to and from Delhi remain impacted. These specific disruptions are attributed to a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) currently in effect at Delhi’s airport, creating a secondary hurdle for commuters. Officials have urged travelers to remain vigilant and verify their flight status with respective airlines before heading to the terminal.

The successful reopening of the airport is more than a logistical victory; it represents a vital restoration of the Valley’s connection to the outside world during the peak of its winter season. In a region where the geography frequently dictates the pace of life, the swift intervention by administrative and defense agencies highlights the critical importance of maintaining infrastructure resilience. As the skies clear over Srinagar, the focus now shifts to stabilizing the broader flight schedule and ensuring that the backlog of passengers is managed efficiently amidst the ongoing seasonal challenges.
