Mahindra & Mahindra concluded a landmark calendar year by securing its position as the second-largest carmaker in the Indian market, bolstered by a robust double-digit growth trajectory. The homegrown SUV specialist reported domestic sales of 50,946 units in December 2025, marking a significant 23 percent year-on-year increase over the 41,424 units sold in the same month the previous year. While the broader industry often grapples with a cyclical year-end cooling—evidenced by Mahindra’s own 10 percent month-on-month dip from November—the brand’s ability to command a 12.6 percent market share highlights a profound shift in consumer preference toward its rugged and tech-heavy portfolio.

At the heart of this success remains the Scorpio franchise, which continues to defy age and competition. The Scorpio range emerged as the brand’s primary volume driver, dispatching 15,885 units and recording a 30 percent year-on-year jump. Remarkably, the model maintained its momentum even against seasonal trends, posting a marginal 2 percent growth over November. Close on its heels, the venerable Bolero proved its enduring relevance in the Indian heartland. Aided by a recent mid-life refresh that revitalized its appeal across diverse market tiers, the Bolero recorded a staggering 79 percent growth compared to December 2024, contributing 10,611 units to the monthly tally.

The compact and lifestyle segments also showcased resilience, though they were more susceptible to the typical December slowdown. The XUV 3XO, a critical volume pillar in the competitive sub-four-meter space, delivered 9,422 units for a 35 percent year-on-year gain, despite an 11 percent decline from the previous month. Similarly, the Thar remains a formidable lifestyle icon, posting 9,339 units—a 22 percent increase over the previous year. Mahindra is already signaling its intent to maintain this dominance in 2026, with plans to refresh the three-door Thar to align its aesthetic with the more premium Thar Roxx.

Perhaps the most significant narrative shift for Mahindra is its aggressive pivot toward electrification. The newly introduced XEV 9e has made an immediate impact, clocking 2,154 units in December and representing a 51 percent surge over its November performance. The BE 6 followed suit with 1,481 units, growing 13 percent month-on-month. Even in the premium internal combustion space, the transition from the XUV 700 to the revised XUV 7XO is underway; the newer model reported 971 units while the outgoing XUV 700 accounted for 453 units. With the recent launches of the XEV 9S and the XUV 3XO EV, Mahindra is no longer just an SUV manufacturer but a burgeoning powerhouse in the electric vehicle ecosystem.

This year-end performance is more than just a collection of sales figures; it is a testament to a strategic overhaul that has balanced heritage brands with futuristic electric mobility. By effectively managing the transition from legacy models like the XUV 700 to more modern iterations and simultaneously scaling its EV production, Mahindra has insulated itself against the volatility of the automotive market. As the company prepares to roll out an even more extensive lineup over the next 24 months, its current standing as India's second-largest automaker appears to be a foundation for even greater expansion in the years to come.
