Six dead, several injured as roof collapses in Humayun's Tomb complex in Delhi's Nizamuddin

New Delhi:

At least six people were killed, including three women and three men, after the roof of a room near a mosque inside the Humayun's Tomb complex in Delhi's Nizamuddin area collapsed on Friday. However, the official confirmation about the death count is yet to be made. As per the information, several others have also sustained injuries after the roof of a restroom built alongside the wall of Pate Shah’s dargah has collapsed. The Delhi Fire Services (DFS) initially estimated that around eight to nine people were feared trapped. However, later reports suggested that 14 to 15 people may have been trapped in the collapse. A call regarding a portion of the tomb structure falling was received around 4.30 pm, a Delhi Fire Services official said.

NDRF carries out rescue ops

Police officials and fire service personnel rushed to the scene immediately upon receiving the alert and began rescue operations without delay. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team has also arrived at the location and joined the ongoing efforts to safely retrieve those believed to be still trapped. A senior DFS official had initially said a call regarding the collapse of a portion of a dome at the tomb was received after which five fire tenders were rushed to the spot immediately. Authorities clarified that the incident did not involve the main dome of the 16th-century monument but a smaller room within its premises. Humayun's Tomb, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a major tourist attraction in the national capital and is visited daily by hundreds of domestic and foreign visitors.
