A welfare initiative meant to provide relief to the needy descended into chaos on Tuesday when a blanket distribution programme in Uttar Pradesh’s Gonda district was overwhelmed by an unexpectedly large crowd, forcing police to intervene to prevent the situation from spiralling further out of control.

The incident occurred at Majapur Mill in the Colonelganj area, where the distribution drive had been organised with the aim of offering blankets to local residents. As soon as the distribution began, a massive gathering formed at the venue, far exceeding the arrangements put in place by organisers. The sudden surge led to disorder, with people pushing forward in an attempt to collect blankets, causing the management system to collapse.

Senior district officials, including the District Magistrate, along with a local legislator, were present at the event when the unrest broke out. Despite their presence, the situation quickly became difficult to manage. Police personnel deployed at the site were seen making sustained efforts to control the crowd and restore order.

Amid the confusion, reports emerged of several blankets being forcibly taken during the rush, highlighting the extent of the breakdown in crowd control. Law enforcement officials responded promptly, taking immediate steps to stabilise the situation and prevent further disruption.

Authorities eventually managed to bring the event under control and attempted to conclude the programme in a calm and orderly manner. The incident has once again drawn attention to the challenges of managing large-scale public welfare programmes and the need for stronger crowd management measures to ensure such initiatives reach beneficiaries without incident.

The Uttar Pradesh government’s ongoing campaign against graft delivered another major jolt on Wednesday after an Anti-Corruption Unit team apprehended a clerk posted at the Chief Medical Officer’s (CMO) office in Gonda. The official, identified as Shashikant Singh, was taken into custody after being allegedly caught red-handed while accepting a bribe.

According to officials, the operation was part of the state’s intensified push to enforce its zero-tolerance policy toward corruption. Acting on specific inputs, the Anti-Corruption team conducted a swift and planned raid inside the CMO office, during which Singh was allegedly found in possession of illicit money received in exchange for official favours. Officers immediately detained him and initiated legal procedures as per departmental and criminal regulations.

The arrest has sent shockwaves through administrative circles in the district, reinforcing the message that the government intends to pursue misconduct at every level of the bureaucracy. Investigators are expected to examine whether more individuals were involved or if the incident is part of a larger pattern.

Officials from the Anti-Corruption Wing stated that the action underscores the Yogi Adityanath administration’s commitment to curbing bribery and ensuring transparent governance. The government has repeatedly maintained that no official—regardless of rank—will be spared if found engaging in corrupt practices.
