A special MP-MLA court in Rampur on Wednesday acquitted senior Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan in an eight-year-old case involving an alleged derogatory remark about Indian Army personnel. The court ruled that the prosecution failed to provide sufficient evidence to substantiate the charge, leading to Khan’s discharge from the matter.

The case stemmed from a 2017 election rally in which Khan was accused of making a controversial statement concerning Army soldiers. The complaint was originally filed by Akash Saxena, who is now the BJP’s sitting MLA from the city constituency. After years of proceedings, the court concluded that the material presented could not support the allegations, clearing Khan of wrongdoing in this specific case.

Despite Wednesday’s relief, Khan remains in custody at Rampur District Jail. He is currently serving a seven-year sentence handed down after he and his son, Abdullah Azam, were convicted in a case related to the possession of two PAN cards.

Senior Samajwadi Party leader Ramgopal Yadav has sharply criticized the State’s SIR system, arguing that the mechanism was unnecessary and designed primarily to help the ruling establishment retain power. Speaking in Uttar Pradesh on Monday, Yadav said that India’s electoral process had functioned smoothly since 1952, with new voters being added to the rolls every election cycle without controversy or administrative hurdles.

Yadav asserted that the introduction of SIR represented a strategic attempt to influence political outcomes rather than a genuine electoral reform. According to him, the democratic process has always accommodated new voters “in a normal way,” and any deviation from that tradition risks undermining public trust.
