Kolkata: The death toll in the devastating warehouse collapse at Taratala in south Kolkata climbed to 11 on Thursday as rescue teams continued intensive search operations for more than 24 hours, using advanced technology, including the Indian Army's ground-penetrating radar system, to locate survivors trapped beneath the debris.

Five more people were rescued from the rubble on Thursday morning, taking the total number of individuals pulled out from the collapsed structure to 30, according to sources associated with the rescue operation.

Official sources stated that 10 victims died either at the site of the collapse or shortly afterward. Another injured person, identified as Ganesh Kalindi, 45, succumbed to injuries while undergoing treatment at SSKM Hospital, raising the death toll to 11.

The deceased have been identified as Krishna Chowdhury, 30, from North 24 Parganas; Rohit Choudhari, 40, from Nadia; Rahul Choudhury, 17, from Purba Bardhaman; Chandrama Choudhury, 60, from Krishnanagar; Pappu Rajak, 40, from Shyamnagar; Azgar Hossain, 55, from Khidirpur in Kolkata; Sahil Sardar, 17, from Basanti; Ghi Kumar, 17, from Munger in Bihar; Hasan Imam, 44, from Metiabruz; Nabin Singh from Asansol; and Ganesh Kalindi, 45.

Nineteen injured persons are currently undergoing treatment at a state-run hospital, officials confirmed.

Rescue operations faced a temporary setback when heavy rainfall halted activities for nearly an hour. Despite the disruption, personnel from the police, fire services, the National Disaster Response Force, and the Army remained deployed at the site and continued efforts to locate any remaining survivors.

The collapsed warehouse was under construction on a leasehold plot owned by Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port.

Rescue operations continued throughout the night under the supervision of senior state government and civic officials, including Health Secretary Narayan Swarup Nigam, Kolkata Police Commissioner Ajay Nanda, and Kolkata Municipal Corporation Commissioner Smita Pandey.

A senior state government official said that all available resources had been mobilized to identify and rescue individuals who might still be trapped beneath the debris.

“The rescue operation is being carried out on a war footing. Advanced equipment, including the Army's ground-penetrating radar, cameras, and other specialized devices, is being used to locate possible survivors. Our priority remains saving lives and ensuring immediate medical assistance to the injured,” the official said.

The Army’s ground-penetrating radar system is being utilized to detect signs of life beneath the collapsed structure. The technology can identify movement and pulse signals through layers of debris, enabling rescue personnel to concentrate excavation efforts on specific locations.

Specialized cameras have also been deployed beneath the rubble to identify trapped individuals. Authorities are additionally using mobile phone tower data to trace the locations of persons whose mobile devices remain active under the debris.

Five individuals have been arrested in connection with the incident. The accused have been identified as warehouse owner Shambhunath Behera, structural engineer Kamal Samanta, Gulzar Hussain, supervisor of Ayan Traders, labour supplier Dibakar Bhandari, and Abdul Hamid.

Kolkata Police has registered a suo motu case under charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder and other relevant legal provisions against the accused.

“We have initiated a criminal investigation into the collapse. At least five persons have been arrested so far, and further inquiries are underway to identify others who may have been responsible. We are examining all aspects, including structural safety compliance and operational procedures at the warehouse,” a senior police officer said.

Behera Brothers was the lessee of the collapsed warehouse located on Transport Depot Road in Taratala. Investigators are examining the circumstances that led to the collapse and determining whether violations of structural safety standards and operational regulations contributed to the tragedy.

The disaster has emerged as one of the most serious industrial accidents in Kolkata in recent years, triggering an extensive rescue mission, a criminal investigation, and renewed scrutiny of construction safety standards as authorities race against time to locate anyone who may still be trapped beneath the wreckage.

Bharatiya Janata Party Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament Raghav Chadha on Thursday demanded the resignation of Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann over an alleged objectionable video controversy, asserting that an investigation conducted by the Gurugram Police has eliminated all doubts regarding the authenticity of the video.

Chadha’s remarks came two days after the Gurugram Police arrested two individuals in connection with a complaint concerning the alleged procurement of a fabricated forensic report related to the viral video linked to the controversy involving Mann.

The Haryana Police registered a case on Tuesday following a complaint from a man who alleged that he had been approached to obtain a fabricated forensic report concerning the video.

Earlier this month, Akal Takht, the highest temporal authority of the Sikh community, declared Mann an “enemy of the Guru” and “opponent of the Khalsa community” over the video, which allegedly shows a man resembling the Punjab Chief Minister engaging in objectionable activities in the presence of images of Sikh Gurus and Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale.

Addressing reporters, Chadha alleged that the truth behind what he described as the “real sacrilege video” involving Mann had now emerged. He further claimed that efforts by Mann and the Punjab government to conceal the facts through a fabricated forensic report had been exposed.

“The sin committed by Bhagwant Mann and the Punjab government in preparing a fake and fabricated forensic report to hide the truth about that video has been exposed,” Chadha claimed.

He further asserted that any uncertainty regarding whether the video was genuine, artificially generated, or fabricated had now been removed.

Claiming that the controversy had deeply hurt members of the Sikh community, Chadha stated that Mann was no longer fit to continue as Punjab’s Chief Minister and called for legal action against him.

According to Chadha, the Sikh community is demanding two actions: the immediate resignation of Bhagwant Mann from the post of Chief Minister and the initiation of legal proceedings against him under Punjab’s newly enacted sacrilege law.

He also demanded a wider investigation into the alleged fabrication of the forensic report, claiming that multiple individuals may have been involved in the process.

Chadha questioned whether government officials participated in obtaining the report, whether public funds were used, whether bribes were paid, and whether any aspect of the matter could involve money laundering. He urged authorities to conduct a comprehensive investigation and take appropriate legal action against those found responsible.

The BJP leader further alleged that the Aam Aadmi Party had challenged the authority of Akal Takht and hurt the sentiments of the Sikh community. He accused the party of making remarks against the institution, deploying paid social media accounts to target it, and making derogatory comments that angered and offended followers of Guru Nanak.

Referring to his departure from the Aam Aadmi Party, Chadha said he considered himself fortunate to have distanced himself from what he described as an anti-community and Guru-betraying political organization.

“I believe that God has specially blessed me by ensuring that I distanced myself from this anti-community, Guru-betraying Aam Aadmi Party at the right time,” he said.

Bhagwant Mann has rejected the allegations surrounding the video and described the controversy as “false propaganda” intended to defame him.

The Punjab unit of the Aam Aadmi Party has also maintained that forensic examinations conducted at two separate laboratories concluded that the individual seen in the video is not the Punjab Chief Minister.

A businessman undergoing treatment for depression was found dead by suicide at the residence of Kannada actor Krishi Thapanda in Bengaluru’s Rajarajeshwari Nagar, prompting an ongoing police investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

According to police officials, the incident occurred at approximately 8:30 pm on Wednesday night while Krishi Thapanda was away in Yelahanka. The deceased, identified as Vaishak, had reportedly been staying at the actor’s residence for the past week.

Authorities confirmed that no suicide note was recovered from the scene. Following the discovery, the body was shifted to Victoria Hospital for a post-mortem examination. Police officials stated that further details regarding the cause and circumstances of the death will emerge after the completion of legal and forensic procedures.

Investigators revealed that Vaishak had been undergoing treatment for depression and was facing personal and family-related difficulties. Preliminary findings indicate that he had been living separately from his wife for nearly a month following frequent disputes between the couple.

Vaishak had previously come under police scrutiny in a high-profile extortion and threat-letter case involving businessman and advocate Aravind Reddy. In February, a threatening letter allegedly demanding between Rs 6 crore and Rs 7 crore, along with an apology, was reportedly sent to Reddy through a courier service.

During the investigation into the case, HAL Police arrested Vaishak, alleging that he had sent the threatening letter in connection with a dispute involving a woman. He was subsequently released from custody.

The Karnataka High Court had stayed further investigation against Vaishak on February 6. Prior to the court’s intervention, he had been taken into custody and questioned for five days by HAL Police as part of the probe.

Police officials said family members of the deceased are expected to file a formal complaint regarding the death. Rajarajeshwari Nagar Police are likely to register a case and complete all mandatory legal formalities before handing over the body to the family following the post-mortem examination.

More than four decades after the bombing of Air India Flight 182, Canada's premier intelligence agency has explicitly attributed the country's deadliest terrorist attack to Khalistani extremists, marking a significant shift in Ottawa's official position and reigniting a long-standing point of contention with India.

In a Facebook post issued on Wednesday to commemorate the tragedy, the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) directly linked the attack to the separatist movement. The agency stated, "On June 23, 1985, a bomb planted by Canada-based Khalistani extremists destroyed the aircraft, killing everyone on board — most of them Canadians. It remains the deadliest terrorist attack in Canada’s history and a defining moment for our national security community."

The bombing of Air India Flight 182, a Boeing 747 known as Emperor Kanishka, occurred while the aircraft was en route from Toronto to Mumbai. The attack remains the worst terrorist incident in Canadian history and was the deadliest act of aviation terrorism in the world until the September 11 attacks in 2001.

Investigators determined that a bomb concealed in the aircraft’s luggage compartment by members of the banned Khalistani organization Babbar Khalsa caused the explosion. The blast tore the aircraft apart over the Atlantic Ocean, killing all passengers and crew members on board. In 2005, Canada officially designated June 23, the anniversary of the tragedy, as the National Day of Remembrance for Victims of Terrorism.

CSIS's decision to explicitly identify the Khalistani movement as responsible for the attack comes only months after the agency's annual report described Khalistani extremists as a serious national security concern. In that report, CSIS warned that Canada-based Khalistani extremist groups were using Canadian territory to promote a violent extremist agenda while financing and organizing violent activities.

For decades, India has accused Canada of ignoring concerns that Ottawa was providing a safe environment for Khalistani activities long after the movement's influence had significantly diminished within India. Successive Canadian governments, particularly under former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, repeatedly clashed with New Delhi over the issue. The Trudeau administration went as far as accusing India of conducting violent transnational operations against Canadian citizens. However, Canada's recent recognition of the threat posed by Khalistani networks has strengthened India's long-standing position on the matter.

The question now being raised is why Canada required more than forty years to officially and unambiguously identify Khalistani extremists as the perpetrators of the Air India disaster.

Government communications frequently referred to the perpetrators as "insurgents" or "unnamed extremists" rather than explicitly identifying the ideology behind the attack. It has taken sixteen additional years for Canadian authorities to abandon that ambiguity and publicly acknowledge Canada-based Khalistani extremists as the architects of the country's deadliest terrorist attack.

Ramakant stated that he had booked a 2AC ticket priced at ₹3,589. During the booking process, he mistakenly entered his age as 1 year instead of 24 years. CCTV footage allegedly shows her approaching Arvind Patel from behind while he was seated on a chair and engaging in inappropriate physical contact. The footage further indicates that Patel attempted to stand up and move away from her.

Despite his attempt to distance himself, the female trainee constable is seen continuing the behavior and briefly restraining him from leaving the area. As Patel attempted to resume his clerical work and handle official registers and files, she reportedly repeated the same conduct. At one point, she is seen sitting on his chair in the control room.

While Emirates has not formally unveiled the seat or released detailed technical specifications, reports indicate that the product has been seen onboard certain new Airbus A350 aircraft operated by the airline. Industry observers and aviation enthusiasts believe the seat may be the Safran Z400, a modern economy-class seating solution developed by Safran Seats.

The National reportedly contacted Safran Seats to verify whether the seat featured in viral footage was the Z400 model. According to the IMD, 25 districts have been placed under a yellow alert, indicating the likelihood of sustained rainfall, thunderstorms, and strong winds. These districts include Thane, Mumbai, Raigad, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Nashik, Ahilyanagar, Kolhapur, Sangli, Solapur, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Jalna, Parbhani, Beed, Hingoli, Nanded, Akola, Amravati, Bhandara, Buldhana, Gadchiroli, Gondia, Nagpur, Wardha, and Washim.

An orange alert has been issued for Pune, Yavatmal, Latur, Dharashiv, Chandrapur, and Satara districts, where the weather department has forecast heavy rainfall and significantly adverse weather conditions.

Over the past two days, intensified monsoon activity has resulted in heavy rainfall across Mumbai and neighbouring Thane district. Data from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) confirmed a total of 113 incidents involving fallen trees and branches. Of these, 40 incidents were reported in the city area, 23 in the eastern suburbs, and 50 in the western suburbs.

In a shocking incident on Mumbai’s suburban railway network, a minor argument over whether a train door should remain open or closed during heavy rainfall escalated into a fatal stabbing, claiming the life of a 22-year-old commuter identified as Mayank Lohar.

According to police, the incident began on Tuesday night at approximately 10:42 PM when Mayank Lohar, a resident of Virar employed at a Westside retail outlet in Andheri, and 30-year-old Roshan Suvarna, a resident of Mira-Bhayandar working as a barcode maker at an airport cargo hub, boarded the first-class compartment of the Churchgate–Nalasopara local train from Andheri station. Heavy rainfall was lashing Mumbai at the time, and water was entering the coach through an open door.

A disagreement quickly erupted between the two passengers, with Mayank Lohar insisting that the door be closed to prevent rainwater from entering the compartment, while Roshan Suvarna insisted it remain open. The argument intensified as the train proceeded between Andheri and Borivali, despite attempts by fellow passengers to defuse the situation.

Borivali Railway Police Senior Inspector Dattatray Khuperkar stated that eyewitness accounts confirm Roshan Suvarna became increasingly aggressive. Passengers inside the coach, which carried nearly 50 commuters, attempted to intervene and requested him to stop the argument, but he remained unresponsive. In an attempt to reduce tension, some passengers advised Mayank Lohar to move toward another door inside the compartment to create distance between them. However, no passenger physically restrained the accused.

The situation turned violent when, after Mayank Lohar moved away, Roshan Suvarna continued hurling abuses. Between Goregaon and Malad stations, he opened his bag, retrieved a knife, and suddenly attacked Mayank Lohar inside the moving train. He inflicted three to four stab wounds to the victim’s chest and abdomen.

At approximately 11:04 PM, as the train arrived at Borivali Station Platform Number 6, the accused jumped out of the compartment before the train came to a complete halt and fled the scene.

The incident was reported to the Government Railway Police and the Railway Protection Force around 11:07 PM, following which officials rushed to the compartment. The critically injured Mayank Lohar was immediately taken to the Borivali station emergency medical room and subsequently shifted to Shatabdi Hospital in Kandivali. Despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries in the early hours of Wednesday.

A large-scale manhunt was launched to apprehend the accused. Railway police formed seven dedicated teams and examined footage from more than 40 CCTV cameras stretching from Borivali to Panvel. Investigators also reviewed mobile phone videos recorded by passengers inside the coach, which clearly showed the accused carrying a knife and moving within the compartment after the attack. Combining CCTV evidence and eyewitness footage, police traced and arrested Roshan Suvarna from Panvel within hours of the incident.

The case has raised serious concerns over passenger safety in Mumbai’s suburban railway system, particularly during peak overcrowding and adverse weather conditions, highlighting the urgent need for stronger on-board security and rapid intervention mechanisms.

In a significant assertion of religious autonomy, the management of Takht Sri Hazur Sahib has issued a collective religious decree rejecting the Maharashtra Government’s proposal to repeal the “Nanded Sikh Gurdwara Sachkhand Sri Hazur Abchal Nagar Sahib Act, 1956” and replace it with a new legislative framework. The decision was taken following a high-level meeting involving the Five Beloved Ones of the Guru, senior religious leaders, and representatives of various Sikh religious institutions.

These organizations have described the move as a direct intrusion into the religious autonomy of one of Sikhism’s five Takhts, warning against any attempt to alter its religious code of conduct or administrative independence. Earlier, in February 2024, the Maharashtra Government had amended the framework to allow direct nomination of 12 out of 17 board members. It also reduced the role of nominations by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee and removed representation from the Chief Khalsa Diwan, Hazuri Sachkhand Diwan, and Sikh Members of Parliament. Following strong opposition from the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee and other Sikh organizations, the amendment was later withdrawn.

Similar attempts were made in 2018 and 2019 but were successfully resisted.

A dispute over keeping a train door closed during heavy rain on Mumbai’s suburban railway network escalated into a fatal stabbing on Tuesday night, leaving a 21-year-old passenger dead and triggering a large-scale police manhunt that ended with the arrest of the accused within hours.

According to police, the accused, identified as 30-year-old Roshan Suvarna, a resident of Mira-Bhayander who works in barcode making for an organisation, was arrested from Panvel after investigators reviewed footage from nearly 400 CCTV cameras and deployed seven dedicated teams. Officials confirmed that Suvarna had no known criminal record. Investigators are also examining whether he was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident. Police further stated that he had been involved in an earlier altercation with an autorickshaw driver on the same day.

The victim, identified as Mayank Lohar, a resident of Virar, boarded the Churchgate–Nalasopara suburban local train from Andheri station at approximately 10:42 pm on Tuesday night. Police said both men were standing near a coach door that had been shut due to heavy rain. Suvarna allegedly opened the door, allowing rainwater to enter the compartment and splash passengers. Lohar then closed the door again, which led to an argument between the two.

The confrontation escalated into a scuffle, after which fellow passengers intervened and separated them. Some commuters reportedly confronted Suvarna during the altercation, after which investigators believe he felt humiliated and blamed Lohar for the incident.

Police allege that while the train was travelling between Goregaon and Malad stations, Suvarna took out a knife from his bag and repeatedly stabbed Lohar in the chest and abdomen. The victim collapsed inside the crowded coach as passengers watched in shock.

A commuter-recorded video reportedly showed the accused holding the knife and threatening passengers after the attack. As the train approached Borivali station, Suvarna allegedly jumped off and fled the scene. Lohar was rushed to a hospital, where he was declared dead around midnight.

Following the killing, the Borivali Government Railway Police launched an intensive investigation and formed seven teams. Officials tracked the accused’s movements using CCTV footage from railway stations and surrounding areas. Police said Suvarna was seen taking an autorickshaw toward his residence after leaving Borivali. He allegedly returned home after the incident without disclosing details and was later traced to Panvel, where he was apprehended. Investigators also believe he was planning to flee to his hometown in Karnataka.

The weapon used in the attack has not yet been recovered. During questioning, Suvarna allegedly told police that he had purchased the knife online for a friend.

An incident involving alleged rash driving by a Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) AC double-decker bus resulted in a collision with a taxi while entering the Colaba bus depot late last night. The D.N. Nagar Police Station in Mumbai has registered a cheating case against a 46-year-old woman after a United Kingdom-based Indian-origin man alleged that she fraudulently obtained more than ₹15.72 lakh from him under the pretext of marriage while concealing critical details about her past relationships.

The complainant, Amit Gadhvi, originally from Jamnagar in Gujarat and currently residing in Leicester, United Kingdom, reportedly came into contact with the accused, Rekha Hamir Solanki, through a matrimonial website in July 2020. According to the complaint, Gadhvi had created a profile on the platform following his divorce and was actively seeking a life partner.

Police stated that after connecting through the matrimonial portal, the two began communicating regularly through WhatsApp calls and messages. During these interactions, Solanki allegedly presented herself as a divorcee living in Andheri West in Mumbai and claimed to have a teenage daughter.

As their relationship developed, the accused allegedly gained Gadhvi’s trust and repeatedly sought financial assistance on various grounds, including visa processing expenses, air tickets, rent, personal needs, and emergency requirements. Believing the relationship would culminate in marriage, Gadhvi allegedly transferred money through Western Union on multiple occasions between July 2020 and July 2021.

Authorities further noted that the complainant initially sent funds to support visa applications and travel arrangements for Solanki and her daughter to visit the United Kingdom. The woman and her daughter subsequently travelled to the UK in November 2020, during which an engagement ceremony was allegedly conducted in the presence of friends and family members.

While in the United Kingdom, Gadhvi also allegedly purchased an iPhone worth approximately £1,200 for Solanki’s daughter and provided additional cash and travel-related financial support. He further claimed that he continued sending money even after Solanki returned to India.

According to the complaint, the total amount transferred by Gadhvi stood at 15,669 British Pounds, equivalent to approximately ₹15.72 lakh.

The case took a turn after the complainant allegedly learned through mutual acquaintances that Solanki had been involved in multiple marriages and had previously taken money from other men under similar promises of marriage. Upon confrontation, she allegedly admitted to having been married three times. Gadhvi also alleged that she concealed a relationship with another man.

Realising he had been deceived, Gadhvi stopped sending money in July 2021. Despite repeated attempts by Solanki, her daughter, and her sister to persuade him to continue the relationship, he refused further contact. The complainant further alleged that he was later blocked on WhatsApp by the accused.

Based on the complaint, the D.N. Nagar Police have registered a case against Rekha Hamir Solanki under Section 420 of the Indian Penal Code for cheating. Officials have initiated an investigation and are currently examining financial transactions and supporting evidence submitted by the complainant.

New Delhi: Security agencies across India have stepped up preparations for Muharram processions, with extensive deployment of police personnel, surveillance technology, and crowd-management measures planned ahead of Ashura, which will be observed on Friday. Authorities in several states have strengthened security arrangements to ensure peaceful observance of the occasion commemorating Imam Hussain and his companions.

In the national capital, Delhi Police has been placed on high alert for the Tazia processions scheduled on June 26. Additional police forces, barricading, and advanced monitoring systems have been deployed in several areas, particularly in North-East Delhi and Old Delhi, where large processions are traditionally held.

According to official information, North-East Delhi Police will deploy more than 1,100 local police personnel during the Ashura procession and has requested 20 companies of security forces from Police Headquarters. The district is considered highly sensitive, prompting authorities to implement extensive security measures.

North-East Delhi Deputy Commissioner of Police Rahul Alwal said that 14 drones would be used to monitor crowds, while facial recognition technology would be deployed to track criminal elements. To ensure the smooth conduct of the procession, police officials held 21 meetings at levels ranging from Police Station officers to the Deputy Commissioner of Police with peace committees, community harmony groups, cable operators, and prominent local residents.

Nearly five decades after the Emergency was imposed in India, the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has, for the first time, included the subject in a Class 9 Social Science textbook. According to an IANS report, the new textbook presents the Emergency as one of the most significant challenges faced by Indian democracy.

The newly introduced textbook, titled Understanding Society: India and Beyond, features a detailed discussion on the Emergency and its impact on the country. According to NCERT officials, this marks the first occasion on which Class 9 students will study the history of the Emergency and its consequences in detail. The revision comes as India marks 50 years since the declaration of the Emergency in 1975.

The chapter includes the Emergency under a broader discussion on the achievements and challenges of democracy. It outlines the political and social circumstances that led to the declaration of a national Emergency in June 1975. According to the textbook, rising unemployment, inflation, and growing dissatisfaction with governance during the early 1970s contributed to widespread public unrest. These conditions led to protests and political instability in several parts of the country.

Against this backdrop, a national Emergency was declared in June 1975 on the grounds of “internal disturbance.” The textbook states that several constitutional freedoms were restricted during the 21-month period that followed. Press censorship was imposed, and numerous opposition leaders and social activists were detained. The book notes that democratic institutions came under increasing pressure, while citizens’ rights and freedoms were significantly affected.

The textbook also highlights the role of veteran leader and social reformer Jayaprakash Narayan, widely known as Loknayak. It explains how he mobilized students, young people, and ordinary citizens in opposition to the Emergency. Movements led by him, particularly in Bihar and Gujarat, strengthened demands for democratic reforms across the country.

The book further states that general elections were held after the Emergency ended in 1977. The election results, it says, demonstrated the resilience of Indian democracy, as voters expressed their views through the ballot box and enabled political change through democratic means.

In addition to the Emergency, the new textbook discusses contemporary challenges facing democracy, including fake news, misinformation, poverty, regional divisions, social discrimination, and gender inequality. A new section titled Democracy and You has also been introduced to familiarize students with democratic values and the responsibilities of citizenship.

Hong Kong police have arrested a 35-year-old woman after a 1.5-metre-long crocodile was discovered on the balcony of her apartment, triggering a wider investigation that uncovered more than 100 reptiles inside the property, including several controlled and endangered species.

The case came to light on Wednesday afternoon when a 66-year-old man reported seeing a reptile on the balcony of a residential flat. Authorities responded to the alert and discovered the crocodile, prompting immediate action.

According to local reports, police officers and staff from the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) returned to the apartment shortly after midnight on Thursday to conduct a more detailed inspection. During the search, officials found more than 100 additional reptiles inside the flat. Investigators also identified several species classified as controlled or endangered, raising concerns about possible violations of wildlife protection regulations.

The incident has drawn attention to a separate wildlife-related case in mainland China, where a man living alone in eastern China was sentenced to prison for keeping more than 300 pythons at his residence. The startling case was revealed by state broadcaster CCTV toward the end of June.

Under Chinese law, pythons are classified as Grade Two protected animals. The purchase, sale, breeding, possession, and transportation of the species without official authorization are prohibited.

The investigation began in March 2024 after an elderly resident in Taizhou, Zhejiang Province, spotted a large snake near the base of a local mountain and alerted authorities. Police sought assistance from a professional snake breeder, who provided a crucial lead. The expert explained that pythons require consistently warm and humid conditions to survive, meaning a person keeping a large number of the reptiles would likely consume significant amounts of electricity to maintain temperatures between 20 and 30 degrees Celsius.

Using electricity consumption records as a key investigative tool, police examined nearby residents and eventually identified a man surnamed Guo as the primary suspect. Guo lived alone, was unmarried, and unemployed. Authorities later uncovered more than 300 pythons linked to the case, leading to his conviction.

In a major offensive against the rapidly expanding Digital Arrest scam, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has carried out a large-scale nationwide operation, conducting simultaneous raids at more than 80 locations across 16 states and arresting two accused individuals linked to a sophisticated cybercrime network.

According to IANS, the operation, conducted under Operation Chakra-VI, involved the deployment of 60 special teams across Punjab, Gujarat, Delhi, Maharashtra, Haryana, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Assam, West Bengal, Manipur, Karnataka, and Odisha. The coordinated action formed part of an ongoing investigation aimed at dismantling a criminal network allegedly connected to more than 200 cases of Digital Arrest fraud.

During the operation, the CBI arrested two accused from Chennai and Kolkata. Investigators alleged that the accused were involved in creating shell companies and opening and operating mule bank accounts. These accounts were reportedly used to launder approximately Rs 2 crore in suspected proceeds generated through criminal activities.

Using advanced forensic tools and technical intelligence, the agency identified critical components of criminal networks operating both within India and abroad. The investigation revealed that fraudsters uploaded forged and fabricated documents to lend legitimacy to their fraudulent activities. These included fake orders designed to resemble official directives issued by courts and various law enforcement agencies.

The CBI recently uncovered a fraudulent website whose domain closely resembled that of the Supreme Court of India’s official website. Investigators believe the fake domain was used by cybercriminals to deceive victims under the guise of Digital Arrest schemes. Acting on a complaint received from the Supreme Court Registry, the agency registered a First Information Report and initiated a formal investigation into the matter.

During the raids, investigators seized several important documents, digital devices, mobile phones, and banking transaction records. The seized material is currently undergoing detailed forensic examination and analysis.

The investigation has also uncovered evidence suggesting that, in addition to Indian citizens, several foreign nationals may have been targeted and defrauded by the same network. Relevant law enforcement agencies in the concerned countries are being informed through appropriate official channels.

The operation underscores the growing scale and sophistication of Digital Arrest frauds and highlights the CBI’s commitment to dismantling cybercrime syndicates, tracing financial trails, and ensuring justice for victims affected by cyber fraud across India and beyond.

In a major initiative to protect cattle from Lumpy Skin Disease, the Animal Husbandry Department has intensified preventive measures and launched a large-scale vaccination campaign across the state. Animal Husbandry Minister Joraram Kumawat formally inaugurated the campaign, which aims to immunise 111.51 million cattle during the 2026-27 financial year.

The vaccination programme has been designed to safeguard bovine animals from Lumpy Skin Disease, a contagious viral infection that has previously caused significant losses to livestock owners. The department has adopted an extensive preventive strategy to ensure widespread coverage and strengthen disease control efforts.

Officials stated that two years ago, when a dedicated vaccine for Lumpy Skin Disease was not available, Goat Pox vaccine was used as an alternative measure to protect cattle. However, the availability of a disease-specific vaccine is expected to significantly improve the effectiveness of the current immunisation drive.

During the 2025-26 financial year, a total of 108.95 million bovine animals were vaccinated under the state’s disease prevention programme. Building on that effort, the government has set a higher target of vaccinating 111.51 million cattle during 2026-27.

The campaign will utilise the Homologous Ranchi Strain Live Attenuated Vaccine, specifically developed for protection against Lumpy Skin Disease. Authorities said the use of this dedicated vaccine will strengthen prevention and control measures while enhancing immunity among cattle populations.

The state government will conduct the vaccination programme free of cost on a large scale as part of its comprehensive strategy to prevent and control the spread of Lumpy Skin Disease. The initiative reflects the administration’s commitment to protecting livestock health, supporting cattle owners, and reducing the risk of future outbreaks through systematic immunisation.
