Massive Relief Drive Across Mumbai Slums as SRA Grievance Camps Resolve Hundreds of Long-Pending Cases

Mumbai’s Slum Rehabilitation Authority has launched large-scale grievance resolution camps across Borivali, Goregaon, Bandra, and Sion, resolving hundreds of cases on the spot. Led by CEO Dr. Mahendra Kalyankar and supported by senior leaders including Piyush Goyal, the initiative brings administration directly to citizens, addressing rent disputes, eligibility issues, rehabilitation concerns, and housing allocation problems.

Mumbai has witnessed an extensive administrative outreach as the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) continues to organize special grievance resolution camps and public hearings aimed at addressing long-standing issues of slum residents across the city. These initiatives are drawing large crowds, with numerous pending cases being resolved on the spot, reflecting a strengthened citizen-centric governance model under the administration of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and the proactive leadership of SRA Chief Executive Officer Dr. Mahendra Kalyankar, IAS.

The ongoing campaigns are being seen as a coordinated effort to bring administrative services directly to citizens’ doorsteps, significantly improving accessibility and response time for grievance redressal.

In Borivali, the first-ever SRA public grievance camp was held at Atal Smriti Udyan, marking a significant milestone in on-ground citizen engagement. The camp addressed multiple categories of issues, including biometric-related complications, pending rent disputes, eligibility conflicts, flat allocation concerns, and matters linked to rehabilitation schemes. A large number of cases were resolved during the event. The programme was attended by Union Minister Piyush Goyal, legislator Sanjay Upadhyay, and senior officials of the SRA, highlighting strong institutional backing for the initiative. The drive has been associated with the broader vision of a “Slum Free Mumbai by SRA”.

In Goregaon East’s Aarey Colony, another dedicated grievance camp witnessed the participation of more than 500 residents. Citizens from over 60 housing societies across Andheri, Jogeshwari, Versova, Goregaon, and Dindoshi regions presented their grievances. Many issues were addressed on the spot, with immediate administrative action initiated in several cases. The camp saw the involvement of Member of Parliament Ravindra Waikar, who facilitated coordination between residents and officials.

At Bandra’s Rang Sharda Auditorium, a large-scale public grievance camp benefited over 800 slum residents. Officials engaged directly with citizens on issues related to eligibility verification, rehabilitation processes, documentation challenges, rent concerns, and redevelopment schemes. The event was supported by Cultural Affairs Minister Ashish Shelar, reinforcing the administrative push for streamlined grievance resolution.

In Sion, a highly attended camp at Guru Nanak College Hall saw more than 1,000 residents arriving to present their concerns. SRA officials actively heard complaints and resolved several cases during the session. The event was attended by legislator R. Tamil Selvan, further underscoring political and administrative participation in the outreach initiative.

Dr. Mahendra Kalyankar, IAS, Chief Executive Officer of the SRA, has been widely discussed for his operational approach, which emphasizes field-level grievance camps and direct administrative engagement with citizens. By deploying officials into localities and ensuring immediate resolution of complaints, the SRA’s functioning is increasingly being viewed as a transformed governance model. Slum residents have expressed that, for the first time, the administration is directly reaching their neighborhoods to hear grievances, significantly strengthening public trust in the system.

The series of camps across Borivali, Goregaon, Bandra, and Sion collectively signals a reinforced administrative push toward systematic rehabilitation and faster grievance redressal under the SRA framewor

India’s Urban Water Crisis Deepens as Massive Leakage and Theft Waste Up to 60% of Supply Across Major Cities

India’s urban water systems face a severe crisis as 25–60% of supply is lost due to leakages and theft across major cities. Despite major investments under Smart Cities and AMRUT 2.0, inefficiencies persist in Mumbai, Bengaluru, Indore, and Bhopal, causing massive financial losses and worsening water scarcity for millions of urban residents.

India’s urban water distribution systems are facing an alarming efficiency collapse, with studies and official estimates indicating that between 25% and 60% of treated drinking water is lost in major cities due to pipeline leakages and illegal connections. The crisis spans across metropolitan regions, raising serious concerns over infrastructure decay, financial losses, and resource mismanagement.

Mumbai, one of the country’s largest urban centers, receives approximately 3,850 million litres per day (MLD) of water supply. However, nearly 30% of this supply is estimated to be lost, meaning around 1,000 MLD of water is wasted daily through leakage and other system failures. This volume alone exceeds the combined daily water requirement of Indore and Bhopal, which stands at approximately 900 MLD.

In 2016, under the Smart Cities Mission and AMRUT 2.0 programme, urban local bodies initiated Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems with the objective of reducing Non-Revenue Water (NRW), including leakage and theft, to 20%. Despite an estimated expenditure of nearly 1.5 lakh crore rupees over the past decade, the situation has shown little improvement in several regions.

Leakage levels remain critically high in multiple cities. Bhopal and Indore report losses ranging between 35% and 65%. While Bhopal had claimed to reduce leakage to 16% by 2021, the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) report of 2019 recorded actual losses at 48%. Indore’s leakage level has been estimated at as high as 65%.

In Indore, water is transported from Jalud over a distance of 70 kilometres and lifted to an elevation of 600 metres through pumping systems. The cost of delivering 1,000 litres of water is approximately 29 rupees, with electricity expenses alone reaching 25 crore rupees per month. With 65% of water lost, the city reportedly suffers a monthly financial loss of nearly 15 crore rupees.

Mumbai’s water supply infrastructure, built at a cost of 16,092 crore rupees, is also under severe strain, with approximately 4,500 crore rupees worth of water lost due to leakage and theft. Similarly, Bengaluru spends nearly 10,000 crore rupees annually on water supply operations, while a 35% leakage rate results in an estimated loss of 3,500 crore rupees.

At a national level, only 33% of water remains stored in 166 major reservoirs, while urban water demand has increased by 48%. On average, an individual requires 135 litres of water per day, which rises to 200 litres during summer months. Nearly 600 million urban residents are currently affected by water shortages.

Experts attribute the crisis to multiple structural failures. Aging pipelines with extensive damage remain a primary concern, with audits in Bhopal alone identifying more than 15,000 leakage points. Unauthorized water connections further exacerbate losses, while many municipal bodies lack accurate digital mapping or data of their distribution networks, making it difficult to identify points of failure.

The underground placement of both water and sewage pipelines in parallel systems adds further complexity, making identification of leakages extremely challenging. In addition, the absence of water meters in many regions means consumers are charged flat rates, removing accountability for wastage and preventing penalties for excessive use.

According to Subrata Chakraborty, Director at the Centre for Science and Environment’s water programme, nearly 5,000 urban local bodies in India require urgent intervention through modern monitoring and management systems.

Proposed solutions include the deployment of artificial intelligence-based sensing systems for instant leak detection, Geographic Information System (GIS) mapping with digital twin technology for real-time monitoring, and automated pressure control valves to prevent pipe bursts. Additional measures include color-coded pipeline identification, strict enforcement against illegal connections, replacement of outdated pipelines with corrosion-resistant high-density polyethylene pipes, installation of flow meters for real-time measurement, wastewater recycling for reuse in agriculture and industry, smart metering systems for consumers, and mandatory biannual audits of water distribution networks.

The continuing scale of water loss highlights a deep structural crisis in urban infrastructure, raising urgent concerns over sustainability, financial efficiency, and long-term water security across India’s rapidly growing cities.

The accused, identified as Nihal Solanki, a resident of Panchavati in Nashik, was apprehended from Nalasopara following a search operation launched by Marine Drive Police.

According to officials, the incident occurred late on Sunday night when two police personnel were conducting vehicle inspections at a checkpoint on Marine Drive. The injured officers, identified as Constable Krishnakant Mishra and Rathod, are attached to Marine Drive Police Station. Police stated that both officers sustained serious injuries and are currently receiving treatment in the Intensive Care Unit of Bombay Hospital.

Investigators said the officers had attempted to stop Solanki’s luxury vehicle at the checkpoint. However, instead of complying, he allegedly accelerated the car and struck both personnel before fleeing the location.

Following the incident, police teams rushed to the site and immediately shifted the injured officers to hospital for emergency treatment. A coordinated search operation was subsequently launched, leading to Solanki’s arrest in Nalasopara on Monday morning.

An official confirmed, “Solanki is now in custody as the investigation continues.”

Further investigation into the case remains underway, with authorities working to establish additional details surrounding the incident.

In a separate but similar case reported last month, three people were killed in the early hours after a speeding motorcycle struck a pedestrian at Marine Drive in South Mumbai. The incident took place at 5:40 am at the Parsi Gymkhana junction signal on NS Road, when a 66-year-old pedestrian was crossing the road.

Police said the motorcycle was being driven recklessly by a 19-year-old rider, who also had a woman in her mid-30s as a pillion passenger. The rider reportedly ignored the traffic signal and collided with the pedestrian. All three individuals—the rider, the passenger, and the pedestrian—were rushed to GT Hospital, where they were declared dead. Officials stated that the rider may have lost control of the speeding motorcycle, resulting in the fatal collision.

The two incidents have raised renewed concerns over reckless driving and road safety violations in the Marine Drive area, highlighting the severe consequences of high-speed negligence in densely monitored urban zones.

In a separate and equally disturbing incident, a 24-year-old man was arrested in Nagpur for allegedly murdering his grandmother after a financial dispute involving money withdrawn from her bank account.

In the Thane district case, the incident took place late Friday night in the Mharalgaon area of the Kalyan sub-district. According to Inspector Mukesh Dhage of the Kalyan Taluka Police Station, the victim, identified as Ravindra alias Pintaya alias Dokya Yashwant Ahire, was cornered by three accused persons—Deepak Sukhdev Dange, Vijay Bhide, and Parshuram Bhide—at the Malkhamb Compound around 9 pm.

Police stated that the victim had an ongoing dispute with accused Deepak Sukhdev Dange and had planned to file a police complaint against him. Angered by this development, the three accused intercepted Ravindra and attacked him with sharp-edged weapons. The victim was repeatedly stabbed on his stomach, head, side, and face, resulting in his death at the scene.

Following a complaint filed by the victim’s brother, the police swiftly arrested all three accused. A case has been registered against them under Sections 103(1) for murder and 61(2) for criminal conspiracy under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

In the second case reported from Nagpur, a 24-year-old man, identified as Raju Pramod Bagde, was arrested for allegedly murdering his 68-year-old grandmother, Indubai Kishor Chavan, following a dispute over money withdrawn from her bank account.

According to a police official from Pachpaoli Police Station, Bagde allegedly stole his grandmother’s ATM card on May 18 and withdrew ₹20,000 over the next two days. When the elderly woman confronted him, a heated argument broke out. The official stated that Bagde later returned home in an intoxicated state, leading to another altercation during which he stabbed her multiple times.

He reportedly attempted to erase bloodstains before fleeing the house after locking it from outside. The crime came to light two days later when a foul smell was noticed emanating from the residence. Police later arrested the accused from the Kalmeshwar area.

These back-to-back violent incidents in Maharashtra highlight escalating concerns over brutal interpersonal crimes, with swift police action leading to arrests in both cases.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced on Friday that the state is rapidly emerging as a leading hub for artificial intelligence innovation in India, asserting that the upcoming Mumbai Tech Week 2026 will surpass the scale and impact of its previous edition.

The announcement was made at Sahyadri Guest House, where Fadnavis emphasized that artificial intelligence will be the most transformative force shaping the future and underscored the need for widespread adoption of the technology across governance, industry, and public systems. He stated that Maharashtra is already deploying artificial intelligence across multiple government departments to enhance administrative efficiency and service delivery, with the administration positioning itself as the largest stakeholder in this technological transformation.

Mumbai Tech Week 2026 is scheduled to take place on May 29 and May 30 at the Jio World Convention Centre. The event will bring together leading global artificial intelligence companies, including OpenAI, Meta, Anthropic, and Google Cloud, alongside more than 10,000 developers and technology enthusiasts.

The event is being organized by the Tech Entrepreneurs Association of Mumbai (TEAM) in partnership with the Government of Maharashtra, IDFC FIRST Bank, and Meta. According to official statements, the platform is designed to expand opportunities for young talent and position Maharashtra as a leading center for artificial intelligence innovation in India.

Fadnavis further urged organizers to scale the event beyond its previous edition, highlighting its role in connecting the state’s youth with global opportunities in the artificial intelligence sector. He also called for showcasing government-led artificial intelligence initiatives through immersive and experiential presentations during the event.

The central theme of Mumbai Tech Week 2026, “India: AI in Action,” will focus on real-world applications of artificial intelligence across industries rather than limiting discussions to theoretical discourse. TEAM co-chair and governing council member Harsh Jain stated that the upcoming edition will emphasize demonstration-driven engagement, highlighting how artificial intelligence is reshaping industries and generating new economic opportunities.

The event will also host the AI Excellence Awards 2026, an early-stage startup showcase, and an artificial intelligence-based job fair. More than 25 companies are expected to participate in the recruitment drive, offering over 250 job opportunities to more than 30,000 candidates.

Organizers confirmed that the program will additionally feature masterclasses, “Stories Unplugged” sessions, and 14 satellite events across Mumbai leading up to the main conference.

TEAM, a non-profit organization dedicated to strengthening Mumbai’s technology ecosystem, includes prominent entrepreneurs on its governing council, among them Harsh Jain, Aakrit Vaish, Naia Saggi, Dhruvil Sanghvi, Akanksha Hazari, Vishal Gondal, Mayank Kumar, and Vivek Khemka.

The initiative is being positioned as a major step toward establishing Maharashtra as a global destination for artificial intelligence innovation and technology-driven economic growth.

A major interstate crackdown and a separate outbreak of urban violence have placed Mumbai Police at the centre of two significant criminal investigations, involving arrests linked to a West Bengal firing and bomb hurling case as well as a violent stone-pelting incident in Bandra during an anti-encroachment operation.

In the first development, the Mumbai Crime Branch Unit 6 arrested three accused on Saturday in connection with a firing and bomb hurling case registered in West Bengal. The accused, identified as Shamim Ahmed, Jamil Akhtar, and Aftab Anwar, were apprehended from the Deonar area of Mumbai during a coordinated operation conducted by the Crime Branch. Officials confirmed that the individuals are suspected to be the primary accused in the case.

Following their arrest, the accused were taken into custody by the Shibpur Police from Howrah, West Bengal, for further legal proceedings and investigation. Authorities stated that the case remains under active investigation as agencies continue to examine the broader network and circumstances surrounding the incident.

In a separate incident on Friday, Mumbai Police confirmed the arrest of 16 individuals and the detention of two others in connection with a violent stone-pelting episode in the Garib Nagar area of Bandra. The violence erupted following an anti-encroachment drive conducted near Bandra Railway Station (East) on Wednesday, which escalated into unrest and continued into Thursday.

According to police officials, the accused were involved in pelting stones and paver blocks at security personnel during the operation. The confrontation lasted for nearly an hour before law enforcement was able to bring the situation under control. The arrested individuals were produced before the Bandra Court earlier on Friday.

The violence resulted in injuries to 15 police personnel. Five officers sustained serious injuries, including one officer who suffered a fractured hand and another who sustained a broken nose, while ten others received minor injuries. Authorities confirmed that further legal action is being taken against multiple accused individuals, with interrogation processes still ongoing.

Police officials further stated that among the two individuals detained, one is directly accused of attacking police personnel during the incident. After completion of necessary procedural formalities, a formal arrest is expected to follow.

The twin incidents underscore ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement agencies in managing inter-state criminal activity and maintaining order during civic enforcement operations in densely populated urban zones.
