20 Indian students killed in attacks abroad since 2019, highest in Canada—MEA to Rajya Sabha

New Delhi: The most number of Indian students killed in attacks abroad since 2019 were in Canada, followed by the US, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) told the Rajya Sabha Thursday. Kirti Vardhan Singh, minister of state in the Ministry of External Affairs, also told the Upper House that the maximum number of reported attacks were in Russia and the UK in the last five years.

According to data submitted by the MEA, 20 Indian students have been killed in attacks between 2019 and 2024, with Canada and the US accounting for 80 percent of all deaths. Nine students have been killed in Canada in nine attacks, while seven students in the US have been killed in seven attacks.

Of the 58 attacks against Indian students abroad, Russia topped the list with 14 which have however led to no fatalities. The UK is second with 12 attacks against Indian students, killing one. Other countries where Indian students have been attacked include Ireland (6), Australia (4), Italy (3), Iran (1), China (1), and Kyrgyzstan (1).

In the last five years, the country where the most number of Indian students have died due to various reasons is Canada. According to data published by the MEA in August this year, 172 Indian students died in the North American country. Apart from the nine who have been killed in attacks, 163 Indian students have died due to medical reasons or accidents. There are around 1.3 million Indian students studying abroad, with Canada home to most, around 4,27,000, followed by the US, UK and Australia.
