Tamil Nadu Launches Massive Census Preparations as 1.4 Million Enumerators Undergo Training Ahead of Nationwide Data Exercise

Tamil Nadu has launched extensive preparations for the upcoming census, deploying 140,000 enumerators and 2,700 field trainers ahead of the August house listing phase. A self-enumeration window opens in July, while officials aim to cover 28 million households for detailed socio-economic data collection across the state.

Tamil Nadu has initiated large-scale preparations for the upcoming census operations, with structured training programmes and administrative mobilisation set in motion ahead of the house listing phase scheduled from 1 to 30 August.

As part of one of the country’s most extensive administrative exercises, approximately 140,000 enumerators are set to be deployed across the state. These personnel, drawn from school teaching staff, municipal corporation employees, and officials from various government departments, have been selected to conduct door-to-door data collection across Tamil Nadu.

To ensure uniformity and accuracy in the exercise, around 2,700 district-level field trainers are currently undergoing specialised training. These trainers will subsequently conduct detailed sessions for enumerators, equipping them with the necessary methods and procedures required for accurate household enumeration.

Tamil Nadu Census Operations Director M. Sundaresh Babu stated that the field trainers were appointed at the request of the Census Operations Directorate and will play a critical role in ensuring consistency and precision in data collection. He confirmed that approximately 2,700 field-level trainers are receiving training this week, after which they will train the 140,000 enumerators assigned to conduct the census across the state.

Officials have indicated that each enumerator will be assigned approximately 200 households during the month-long field exercise. Based on these estimates, nearly 28 million households are expected to be covered across Tamil Nadu, making it one of the largest data-gathering operations undertaken in the state.

Prior to the commencement of field enumeration, residents will be given the opportunity to participate in a self-enumeration phase from 17 July to 31 July. During this period, households may voluntarily submit their details online, thereby reducing the time required for field verification and improving overall efficiency of the survey process.

The house listing phase represents the first stage of the census operation, during which detailed information on housing conditions will be collected. Enumerators will gather data on the number of household members, housing characteristics, access to basic amenities, ownership of vehicles, property holdings, and other socio-economic indicators.

Officials have emphasised that the data collected through this exercise will serve as a critical database for future planning, policy formulation, and the implementation of welfare and development programmes in the coming years.
