Assam Positioned as Strategic Bridge for India–European Union Ties: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma highlights the state’s strategic role in strengthening India–EU relations during a meeting with an EU delegation in Guwahati. Discussions focused on investment, trade, green technology, infrastructure growth, and Assam’s Advantage Assam initiative to boost global economic engagement.
In a post on the social media platform X, Sarma said he extended a warm welcome to a visiting European Union delegation in Guwahati, led by European Union Ambassador to India Herve Delphin. He noted that discussions focused on the advantages Assam can offer in deepening India–EU engagement under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The visit comes at a time when Assam is actively pursuing greater international engagement and foreign investment through its flagship Advantage Assam initiative. The state government has been positioning Assam as a key investment destination in eastern India, leveraging its strategic role as a gateway to the Northeast region of India and Southeast Asia.
Officials have consistently highlighted Assam’s expanding infrastructure base, including road, rail, and air connectivity, along with its abundant natural resources and growing industrial ecosystem, as major factors attracting domestic and international investors.
The Advantage Assam 2.0 Investment and Infrastructure Summit, held last year in Guwahati, witnessed participation from domestic and international investors, policymakers, and industry leaders. During the summit, the state showcased investment opportunities across sectors including renewable energy, hydrocarbons, logistics, tourism, agriculture and food processing, information technology, healthcare, and manufacturing.
Assam’s geographical proximity to Bangladesh and Bhutan, along with its access to international trade routes through multimodal connectivity projects, has further strengthened its relevance within India’s Act East policy framework.
The state government has also undertaken multiple measures to improve the ease of doing business, including digitisation of public services, policy reforms, and infrastructure expansion. These initiatives are aimed at positioning Assam as a preferred destination for both domestic and foreign investment.
The engagement between the European Union delegation and the Assam government is expected to further explore avenues of cooperation in trade, sustainable development, green technologies, innovation, and investment.
The European Union remains one of India’s largest trading partners, and Assam aims to leverage its emerging economic strengths to deepen economic and institutional engagement with European businesses and global institutions, reinforcing its role in India’s expanding international economic outreach.
