India Grapples with Severe Heatwave as Prime Minister Narendra Modi Issues Nationwide Advisory on Safety and Compassion

India faces a severe and persistent heatwave as Prime Minister Narendra Modi urges citizens to follow safety precautions, stay hydrated, and support vulnerable groups. Authorities issue health warnings while state administrations activate heat action plans. Political criticism emerges amid rising public distress and extreme weather conditions.

India is witnessing an intense and prolonged heatwave across several regions, with soaring temperatures triggering widespread public health concerns and prompting Prime Minister Narendra Modi to issue a nationwide advisory urging caution, vigilance, and collective responsibility.

In a series of posts on X, formerly known as Twitter, the Prime Minister highlighted the escalating severity of the heat conditions and appealed to citizens to adopt essential precautions to safeguard themselves and others. He stressed the importance of hydration and community care amid the extreme weather.

“Different parts of India are witnessing soaring temperatures and the challenges that come with it. This heat is harsh on all of us and I urge you all to take as many precautions as possible. Please stay hydrated, keep water with you when stepping out. Offer a glass of water to others. In weather like this, such kindness goes a long way,” the Prime Minister stated.

Expanding on health risks associated with extreme heat, Narendra Modi cautioned citizens to remain alert to symptoms of heat-related illnesses and act swiftly when needed. “Watch for signs of heat exhaustion like dizziness, nausea or extreme fatigue. If someone around you feels unusually unwell, weak or develops a headache, it is best to help move them to a cool and shaded place immediately. Ensure they get water, ORS etc. that helps them. Children, the elderly and those working outdoors are especially vulnerable during extreme heat. Ignoring these warning signs can quickly turn dangerous and may even lead to heatstroke. In such weather, timely care and attention go a long way,” he added.

The Prime Minister further urged people to maintain regular contact with elderly family members and ensure their safety during the ongoing heatwave. “Whenever possible, call and check on elderly parents, grandparents and loved ones during this heatwave. Remind them to stay hydrated, avoid stepping out in peak afternoon hours and take rest whenever possible,” he said.

Extending his appeal beyond human welfare, the Prime Minister also called for compassion towards animals and birds during the extreme weather conditions. “In this extreme heat, let us also remember the birds and animals around us. A small bowl of water kept outside your home, balconies, terraces, shops or offices can become a lifeline for a thirsty bird. May compassion guide us in these difficult days,” he stated.

Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department and health authorities have issued repeated warnings regarding above-normal temperatures across multiple regions of the country. Officials have cautioned that vulnerable groups, including outdoor workers, children, and the elderly, face an elevated risk of heat exhaustion and heatstroke under the prevailing conditions.

State governments have activated heat action plans, focusing on public awareness campaigns, distribution of oral rehydration solutions, and establishment of cooling centres to mitigate the impact of the extreme weather. Authorities continue to closely monitor the situation as temperatures remain significantly elevated in several parts of the country.

Health experts have reinforced government advisories, urging citizens to remain indoors during peak heat hours, typically between noon and 4 p.m., wear lightweight clothing, and maintain adequate hydration levels to reduce health risks.

In a parallel political response, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge criticised the government, linking the public distress caused by the heatwave to economic pressures faced by citizens. “We can endure the heat, but the common people are breaking out in sweat from the fire of BJP-sponsored inflation. Won’t you ever say something about the looting by your own government, Mr Modi?” he stated.

As India continues to endure intense and persistent heat conditions, the convergence of health warnings, administrative preparedness, and political debate underscores the broader social and economic pressures accompanying the extreme weather event.
