Uniform Civil Code to be implemented in Telangana, says BJP’s poll manifesto

The Bharatiya Janata Party has released its manifesto for the Telangana Assembly elections, extending a slew of promises including implementation of the Uniform Civil Code and free laptops to college-going girl students.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who released the manifesto in Hyderabad on Saturday, said a committee will be formed to draft a Uniform Civil Code, consolidating and harmonizing various personal laws.

"The BJP government to be formed would constitute a committee to bring UCC in Telangana which will implement Uniform Civil Code within six months," Shah said.

Telangana goes to polls on November 30 and the votes will be counted on December 3.

The saffron party promised to scrap “unconstitutional” religion-based reservations and increase quota for Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (STs) and Other Backward Communities (OBC).

It further said that a committee headed by a retired Supreme Court judge will be appointed to examine the allegations of corruption and financial irregularities against the incumbent government headed by the Bharat Rashtra Samiti.

The Ujwala scheme beneficiaries will be provided with four LPG cylinders at free of cost annually, the manifesto said, adding that  the Value Added Tax (VAT) on petrol and diesel will be reduced on par with the BJP-ruled states.

In another major promise, the saffron party claimed that  a fixed deposit of Rs 2 lakh will be given to girl child at the time of birth which can be redeemed after attaining 21 years of age.
