Uttarakhand: 8 dead, several injured as vehicle crashes near Suni Bridge in Pithoragarh

In a tragic accident on Tuesday, eight people lost their lives when a vehicle carrying 13 passengers fell into a gorge near the Suni bridge in Muwani town, located in Uttarakhand’s Pithoragarh district. The mishap has sent shockwaves through the region, prompting an immediate response from local authorities and emergency services.

Pithoragarh Superintendent of Police (SP) Rekha Yadav confirmed the fatalities and stated that police teams, along with local rescue workers, have reached the site and launched rescue operations. Efforts are currently underway to retrieve the bodies and assist those injured in the crash.

According to initial reports, the vehicle was en route to a nearby village when it lost control and plunged into a deep ravine. The cause of the accident is yet to be determined, though authorities suspect poor road conditions or mechanical failure could be contributing factors.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has expressed deep condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in the tragic road accident near Suni Bridge in Pithoragarh. According to a statement from the Chief Minister's Office (CMO), he has directed the district administration and all concerned relief and rescue teams to expedite rescue operations on priority. The Chief Minister also emphasised that the injured must receive timely and free medical treatment, ensuring that no effort is spared in providing immediate care and support.

Local residents gathered at the scene to help in the rescue, while ambulances ferried the injured to nearby hospitals. Authorities are expected to release more details as the rescue operation progresses.

This incident is the latest in a string of accidents in the hilly terrain of Uttarakhand, where difficult road conditions and monsoon rains often pose significant risks to travellers.

An investigation is currently underway to ascertain the exact cause of the accident. Meanwhile, the district administration continues to coordinate relief and rescue efforts.
